On Friday BioHive's BYU Student Chapter and Brigham Young University's College of Life Sciences students joined us in Salt Lake for a Industry Tour Day. Students visited BD, Recursion, and Seek Labs for comprehensive tours and learning sessions with employees.

They spent the afternoon hearing from ARUP Laboratories's Lisa Carricaburu, Checkerspot's Kevin Kinghorn, and Altitude Lab's Kapil K. Sharma, about the diverse life sciences industry opportunities available to them after graduation.

Days like this are vital to students preparing to enter the workforce, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day possible and to all the amazing companies who opened their doors to these amazing students.

We're marching into March looking forward to a month's worth of stellar and community events.

Yesterday marked the official launch of the Utah Valley University BioHive Student Chapter! 🐝

UVU students interested in joining the industry gathered to hear from Seek Labs' Jared Bauer on the importance of building life science student communities, as well as a powerhouse panel featuring Lumea's Mark Evans, PathNet's Jared Szymanski, ConnectPathology's Anthony Perry, MD, The DDx Foundation's Roberto Nussenzveig, and bioMérieux's Brittany Strobelt (moderated by UVU's own Zenos T.).

The key takeaway? "Learn how to learn. No matter what happens, things are always going to change" - Mark Evans.

We can't wait to see how this amazing group of students builds up the life sciences in Utah.

Before the holidays, a few members of the BioHive team visited Torque3, a unique company based in Centerville, Utah.

Torque3 is on a mission to restore neuro-impaired individuals to living active, independent lifestyles. The Torque3 platform is a deeply immersive simulative simulator using advanced to compensate for impairments. This allows the perception of risk to be used in task-oriented therapy, which enhances . This experience-dependent, multimodal integration engages functional brain regions, including the sensory, association, and motor cortices.

Our team got the chance to not only tour their facility but test out the platform ourselves. The simulation environment was engaging, and it was fascinating to see how VR "video games" can be implemented to help neuro-impaired people regain function.

As we enter 2024 we’d like to reintroduce ourselves. BioHive is a life sciences and biotech nonprofit + public-private partnership based in Salt Lake City, Utah. We are harnessing the power of our Utah community to advance impact-driven solutions for the good of Utah’s life sciences and health innovation industry.

Utah is home to the fastest-growing life sciences industry in the nation. The life sciences industry here produces “$21.6 billion in total statewide economic impact, provides 182,383 indirect and direct jobs, and 48% higher wages for employees compared to other industries” (Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute). BioHive’s mission is to brand, build, and bring together this powerhouse community to keep this momentum growing. 📈

On Wednesday, BioHive’s Women in Technology and Science Chapter (WITS) partnered with the Data Exploration & Learning in Precision Health Intelligence (DELPHI) Initiative (shout out to Penny Atkins) to host a fantastic panel on Transcending Academia into Industry as a Ph.D. candidate or Post-Doc.

Our amazing panelists included Marissa Saunders (Recursion), Leah Frautschy (Denali Therapeutics), Yuan Ji (纪元), PhD, MBA (ARUP Laboratories), Joshua P. Jones (Boston Scientific), and Faith Chamas, PMP (Stryker), as moderator.

The big takeaway? Employers need qualified employees.

We just spent the last two days meeting the next generation of learners at Utah STEM Action Center's annual STEM Fest. This incredible event gave school kids in 4th to 10th grade the opportunity to see STEM learning in action.

Some fun ~kid facts~ we learned ✏
- "Male mosquitos don't actually bite you."
- "You can probably fit a million cells on a microscope slide."
- "Didn't Panagia [the supercontinent] break up in like 5 AD?"
- "Did you know there is a real-life human brain over there?"
- "Well, I go to a school, so of course I'm going to work in science when I grow up."

In all seriousness, it was a great two days interacting with teachers and students alike to help build the foundation of STEM learning in Utah. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, presented, and had fun alongside us. 🐝
