A local thoroughbred and quarter horse breeder has come on hard times and can no longer support her herd of ~60 horses and donkeys, we are raising funds to help feed them until we can find new homes for them.

This is a story I share every year just before Christmas - it’s near and dear to my heart. Some know it as “The Old One” and some as “Because of Love.” Either way, it’s a powerful reminder about why we do what we do. Too many “old ones” are discarded after giving years of love and service to their humans - often put out to pasture or “on the back 40” where they eventually wither away to nothing.

In many rescue cases that we’ve worked, where horses needed to be removed from a property, when humans were given the opportunity to go in and take one or more, the younger horses are usually scooped up. They are more quickly rehabilitated and rehomed - while old ones are often left behind. My heart would never enable me to do that - they are all deserving. My first question when I become involved is usually “Who needs us the most?” regardless of their age.

Our three recent arrivals, Aries, Nicky, and Raz are “old ones”. They are all Thoroughbred mares in their late 20’s. Aries and Raz are full sisters that have always been together and we simply could not separate them - they are very bonded. Nicky, blind and deaf, was in very poor condition and may not have lasted another day. We were not prepared to take in more horses at this time but we couldn’t just turn our heads. We went on faith and a prayer that support would come that would enable us to help them. With your help, we can accomplish much and make a difference to many.

We’ve been blessed to have had many “Old One’s” pass through our gates. While some are with us now such as Venus, Nadia, Jo, Dancer, and others - some that have gone to Rainbow Bridge include Betsy Rose, Little E, Gentleman, Brea, Cricket, Grandma Bones, Nina, Casper, Solace, Matilda, Granny Jewels, Frosty, and many more. Watching the “old ones” and the unconditional love and wisdom that they offer to others in the herd, and to humans, is an amazing experience that words can’t adequately describe. If only all humans would take time to open their hearts to see the beauty within these precious souls, then perhaps they would understand why we do what we do - because of love. Only because of love.

Hi Everyone!

On behalf of Theresa and everyone at Beauty's Haven, we would like to thank each and every one of you for your generosity, love, prayers and support for little Hope. She will not be coming home today as she is being transferred to Medicine to have x-rays taken of her lungs. Theresa will provide an update later this evening regarding the radiographic findings.

In the meantime, life must continue to go on at the rescue and the needs of the other members of our beloved little herd must be addressed. With the grass now dormant, our hay needs have increased exponentially and of course, hooficures must be routinely done every four to six weeks.

Our hay needs this week include four large bales of compressed hay and two bales of alfalfa for a total cost of $550. Alfalfa is a necessary component of the UC Davis re-feeding program that we have instituted for Aries, Raz and Nicky, to ensure their overall health and well-being. Our farrier expenses this week will be approximately, $725.

If anyone would like to help with these needs, it would be so greatly appreciated. You may forward your donation via various means on our website: bhfer.org/donate, via PayPal.me/bhfer or via the ‘Donate’ button included on this post. If donating via PayPal, please select the tab 'Send Money to Friends or Family' and no fees will be deducted from your contribution. Please also note that your donation is for 'Hay and/or Happy Feet.’ Please be assured that all donations are so greatly appreciated and no amount is ever considered as being too small.

Thank you all, so very much!

Warmly,

Jeanne

What a great way to wind down the day! We're over the $3K mark! The goal amount (was $15K) has been adjusted down to reflect donations received outside of Facebook. We still have a ways to go but... baby steps! You all are amazing! https://www.facebook.com/donate/206908477730543/

Nicky was examined by Dr. Julia Simonson today. I'll post an update about that tomorrow along with an update on Aries and Raz. Please keep Aries, Nicky, and Raz in your prayers. They all have some challenges to overcome, especially Nicky, but I believe they will!

Thank you all!

We can’t thank everyone enough for all of the donations that have been sent in. The horses that are still at the farm are in need of Beetpulp for the mash they are being feed. You can call into Quality Hay and Feed for them, I will be picking up some bags myself for them. I know people have been asking about blankets as the temps are dropping this week. I will see what the Rescues want to do as most have not been handled. If you have reached out to one of the 3 in involved and haven’t heard back please be patient as they are tending to the horses and they will be back with you as soon as possible. THANK YOU!!
