Why physicians and patients both benefit from board certification.

Physicians who pursue board certification in a medical or surgical specialty achieve the status as an acknowledged specialist in their field, having mastered the academic knowledge base. While residency training lays the foundation for a specialist's clinical competency, board certification requires mastering the standardized knowledge foundation inherent in a specific specialty. Physicians who obtain board certification ultimately demonstrate that they have mastered not just the clinical skills obtain in residency training, but also the academic standards. Patients benefit from the fact that their physician has taken all steps available to provide them with the standard of medical care.
While Regenerative Medicine is an emerging specialty, it does does have a broad knowledge foundation based heavily in basic sciences.

Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) releases 'Best Practices' in Regenerative Medicine for State Medical and Osteopathic Boards.

In response to a request by Senator Lamar Alexander, on behalf of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee, FSMB released the Regenerative Medicine 'Best Practices' recommendations to State Boards for regulating the promotion, communication, and practices of treatments received at Stem Cell Clinics in the United States.

Here are several highlights from the 11 final recommendations:
1. Novel, experimental, and unproven interventions should only be proposed when traditional or accepted
proven treatment modalities have been exhausted
2. State medical boards should review professional marketing materials and claims, including any office/clinic and/or doctor websites, as information sources in the investigation of complaints made against physicians.
3. State medical boards should pro-actively monitor warning letters sent to licensees that are
made publicly available on the FDA website in order to ascertain information, and consider opening an investigation.
4. Physicians must have received adequate and appropriate training, and be able to perform any proposed intervention safely and competently.
5. Physicians should be prepared to support any claims made about benefits of treatments or devices with documented evidence, for example with studies published in peer-reviewed publications.
