Just finished recording and/or mixing 6 albums and EP’s since spring started, and it feels good! I’ve gotten some new microphones and gear at the start of the year and haven’t had a chance to fully put them to the test. Be my Guinea pig and I’ll record / track up to 20 minutes of material for FREE for your upcoming EP or single, and you only have to pay me to mix it! I’ve got 2 weekends in July still open to try out my new gear. First come first serve! Message me and take advantage of this deal, and honestly you’re doing me a favor at the same time:)

The Music Industry Is OVER as we know it.... 21/03/2023

I heard Dolby Atmos in music for the first time almost 2 years ago, and I was completely blown away. How you are immersed in sound, instruments, vocals and effects came to life not just to the left or the right, but also behind you, above you, just everywhere! It was a new mind altering and emotional experience. The first song that really grabbed me was an Atmos mix of a hit from nearly 50 years ago, Elton John's 'Rocket Man'. Truly life changing to hear that song like I'd never heard it before.
After much consideration, months of planning, studying, reading up on everything that involves how to make this happen in my studio, and being told by naysayers and industry colleagues that I was wasting my time and money, one year ago in March of 2022, I installed my 7.1.4 Atmos mix room. Many mistakes were made, and overall it has been a crazy journey to make it happen. I have zero regrets, after all, Stereo was also considered a gimmick at one time...at least Brian Wilson and The Beatles thought so.
Apple Music have announced that they will no longer playlist artists unless you have an Atmos mix to submit, and Spotify have also announced that they are making the jump to Dolby Atmos for Music.
So, I'll say it again! If you are interested in doing Dolby Atmos mixes for your recording, message me here or visit my website linked in the comment below to schedule an appointment to demo Dolby Atmos for yourself. I can show you mixes done by myself or any of the current artists with Atmos mixes on Apple Music that are available.
Also, check out the local doom metal band 'Breath' and their mixed in Atmos release of 'Primeval Transmissions' that just came out last week on Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon HD through Desert Records. It's one of the many immersive mixes I've done since starting this journey, along with 'Circle of Sighs' releases their 'Performs an Invocation' on streaming services and Blu-Ray disc next month.

This is where it all began... In 1988 when I was still in high school, I applied for my first loan at a bank, and my employer at the restaurant I worked for at the time co-signed to purchase a “futuristic” Yamaha MT 44D multitrack tape recorder complete with the RM602 mixing console, patch bay and storage compartment. It weighed a ton and doesn’t seem like it now, but at the time it was very “state of the art” and just incredible. I made hundreds of demos, some with various bands I played in, but mostly by myself in my bedroom with the help of a Roland DR-220A drum machine (Dr. Rhythm), a Stratocaster I purchased with money from the same job, and a cheap bass that someone had given me. It’s funny to think of the limitations it had at the time, and the amount of ping pinging tracks to the point of audible degradation I did to make room to overdub more stuff. Truly amazing times.

8 months in the making! 3 dozen recording sessions since April of this year and Stanley Lafever's record is finally finished! It was a pleasure as always working with Stanley Lafever and it has been a very monumental and tedious process to get these songs sounding just right, and I'm glad we took our time to get it sounding this great! Now off to mastering and soon to be unleashed to the public- For fans of My Bloody Valentine, Flaming Lips to Indie rockers Unwound, be sure and check out the incredible songwriting and musicianship of this release. Stanley does all the writing, instruments and vocals and it's some of the most interesting complex music I've heard in a great while. I'm excited for people to hear this one!

Recently put the finishing touches on Circle of Sighs “An Invocation of Jarröd” for Blu-ray disc, mixed in Dolby Atmos here at Wrong Way Recording. This musical journey masterpiece tops out over 30 minutes in length and hits musical points ranging from hints of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pink Floyd to bludgeoning in your face Black Metal blasts. Really happy with this mix session, and it was very satisfying to be able to mix in sync with the live performance video to the music simultaneously.

Wrong Way Recording had the wonderful Miss Randall in to record her solo EP last weekend, and the first of many to come! This talented young lady from Mexico City does all of the writing and musical arrangements as well as performing most of the instrumentation and vocals. Her varying styles range from 80s gallop metal to 90s grunge, doom and more!

Message me if you’d like to complete that project you’ve been wanting to record and get that album, single or EP out for the world hear. I can come up with a realistic budget based on your project that won’t break the bank!

Breath laying down the foundation for the new album at Wrong Way Recording, more to come!

Softube has done it again with Console 1, adding extended/new functionality for use with Logic Pro. Tons of new features, including DAW control of aolo/mute/volume/pan for individual and grouped channels, plus color coded views just like the tracks within my project sessions, side chain routing and more. This is an absolute game changer and I've found Console 1 has been the most inspiring piece of gear that I have ever purchased for my studio!

Edit week for the new album. The necessary work for a great drum sound, delicate and rewarding...

May 12, 1996, 4 degenerate heavy rockers known as Iommi Stubbs, local disciples of sludge/doom entered a Northeast Portland studio called Kaos with audio engineer Johnny Belluzzi to lay down what would be the only full length album that these guys would do before parting ways and moving on to other bands such as Witch Mountain and Poison Idea. These 6 songs topping out at 45+ minutes of length never got a proper release or quality mastering before coming out on a limited pressing of 666 copies of vinyl, which are few and far between these days.
About 2 years ago, I had these original reels dumped and digitized by Dave Fulton at Pinebox Studio with an original Tascam MS-16 reel to reel machine just like the one that Johnny had back in the day, running at 15IPS. All and all, the transfer went well, however, on one of the songs, there was a bit of drop in volume (around 3db) for a few minutes on almost all of the 16 tracks of these 1" reels. Today, I started surgery to fix the tracks with great success. Time and patience is your friend for this kind of operation.

The song in question is the medley Lotus/Thy Bowl Runneth Over which has a bit of a back story in itself. Recording on tape wasn't easy back then, and if you retook a song early in the reel and didn't play it the same speed, bad things could happen. We re-did Lotus and ended up going over the beginning of the song after. A little bit of fast thinking and work, we decided to learn one of the parts backwards, flip the reels on the machine and do a little bit of old school 'Are You Experienced?' style fixing, in turn creating a segue from one song to the other, and making this forever a single masterpiece topping out at a whopping 19 minutes.

It was only fitting that this song would be the one that would have to be repaired some 25 years later. I plan on spending some time mixing this and giving it a full and proper sound that it deserves. This is a piece of Portland Metal history, and should be appreciated by an audience that we never got back in the days of the 90's where it wasn't cool to be loud, heavy and playing slow on tuned down guitars. Stubbs Don't Lie.

Been having a blast laying down tracks and mixing Monica Nelson and the Jack London Trio. Monica's voice is soaring with excitement and strong emotional fury while the band lays down a mix of rock/country and punk that brings me back. An absolute pleasure having some old school Portlanders in here recording and doing what they love.

Bands and artists! Now’s the perfect time to book for this fall for that musical project you’ve been looking towards recording, or perhaps an album you’ve previously recorded you’d like remixed in Dolby Atmos for music. I’ve got openings in September and October. Control room journey. With the new Kali IN-5 monitors in use for about a week, I realized that having 3-way monitors to mix properly wasn’t enough. In the 3 years since I opened Wrong Way, I hadn’t properly acoustically treated the control room like I did for my main studio and the reflections and acoustic foam was doing next to nothing for my mixes. I basically just got used to the boxiness around 150-250 hz and dealt with it like most people do. Of course I have Sonarworks to calibrate, but it still wasn’t doing these new monitors justice. Enter Primacoustics London 10 kit. These acoustic 2 inch broadway panels come with 6lb per cubic foot fiberglass with great absobtion characteristics and 1 inch scatter blocks that help with reflection and flutter echo. I built 2 15”x48” mineral wool 3 inch thick bass traps for the corners saving some money and got it all up in 2 days. The difference is phenomenal.
Lesson learned. ALWAYS properly acoustically treat your control room and recording rooms people. Because if you can’t really hear or record what’s going on, those expensive monitors, microphones and preamps are basically not working the way they should. Topped off with a Sonarworks measurement, I’m back in business, and sounding better than ever.

Fantastic time recording with these fine fellows the last 2 days. The Whirlees are a great bunch of guys and brought a nice old school portland scene vibe to Wrong Way Recording this weekend. Looking forward to seeing them again.

Early 60’s gear made it in to the studio for The Whirlees session yesterday. This Vox Cambridge was an amazing sounding little combo amp with some Dave Davies sounding grind, and of course the iconic 1961 Gibson Les Paul ‘SG’ that you don’t see in pawn shops or guitar stores these days. A combo made in heaven.

Happiness is having full caibration for Atmos mixing with perfect speaker, room, gain and delay tuning. Sonarworks really is some of the best software out there for your needs, and I can't recommend it enough. #7.1.4
