SPLIT SQUAT "DO'S" AND "DON'TS!" 👇
Split squats are one of those exercises that when done correctly, can provide a whole lot of benefit. But, when they are done wrong, it can lead to a whole lot of trouble.
Some of the most common mistakes we see during our training sessions:
❌ Too much weight shifting from front foot to back foot
❌ Stance too narrow or too wide
❌ Front knee caving in
❌ Back knee hyper extending
These can all lead to...
➡️ Loss of balance during the movement
➡️ Lack of force production from the main muscles that should be driving the movement
➡️ Potential increased injury risk in knee's and low back
While these are all possible issues that can occur during a split squat, we chose to focus on the most common one we see during our training sessions:
❌ Back knee hyper extending
When this happens, it will often cause the low back to over extend which puts unceccesary pressure and wear and tear on those joints.
The good news is, the fix is really simple!
✅ Focus on keeping your back knee feeling "relaxed" or "soft" throughout the movement
This will help prevent extension in the lumbar spine and will also help you keep your weight toward your front leg.
Try this next time you find yourself doing split squats. Hope this helps!

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PULL-UPS! 👇
For many people, pull-ups are one of the most beneficial exercises for gaining strength, but they can also be one of the most difficult to do correctly.
One of the biggest mistakes we see many people make is using too much speed and momentum through the pulling movement.
This often causes the upper trap to become too engaged, and the lats to not be used to their full potential.
In other words, the muscles we ideally want to be using during the movement are being taken over by the upper trap muscles.
To fix this, do the following:
➡️ Lower yourself down from the top with control. (This means going slower on the way down)
➡️ When pulling up, try and maintain as much space between your ears and your shoulders as possible.
➡️ Complete a full range of motion. Lowering yourself all the way down until your arms are fully extended will help prevent you from using extra momentum on the way up.
🚨WARNING: Yes, if you're used to using a lot of momentum in your pull ups, this will make them feel a lot more challenging and you'll probably do LESS pull-ups than you were before.
Don't let that discourage you! It will only help you get stronger and eventually do more pull ups with proper form than you ever could before.🚨

DO SOMETHING TODAY TO BRING YOU CLOSER TO YOUR GOALS 💪👇
One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking a day off from the gym means a day off from making progress toward their goals...❌
The truth is, EVERY DAY is an opportunity to DO SOMETHING that closes the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. 💯
On your "off days" from the gym, use that time to focus on other areas to make progress:
➡️ Make sure your meals are prepped (Our Fitness Director provides a personalized meal plan for each client)
➡️ Double check your house is stocked with foods you need for the week
➡️ Focus on drinking enough water (we recommend 1/2 your bodyweight in oz)
➡️ Perform a 15 minute mobility circuit and some foam rolling. Your recovery between workouts ultimately determines the results you get. (we provide these routines to our clients)
➡️ Go for a walk to keep your body moving
Don't let another day off from the gym keep you from achieving your goals.

❌ BUTT WINK DURING SQUATS? ❌
What the heck does that even mean?! 😬
It’s a weird term that basically means your spine "over flexes" during squats causing excessive motion in your low back and pelvis.
Why should you care? 🤷
Normally, this type of excessive motion in your spine is no problem when doing a body weight squat.
However, under heavier loads (using barbells, dumbells, ect...), it's important to keep your spine in a fairly "neutral" position throughout the entire movement - or you may increase your risk of an injury.
If you notice some excessive butt wink at the bottom of your squat, don’t sweat it!
We've shared a few simple ideas you can implement to fix it quickly and it won't require you to eliminate squats from your workout routine.
