Hundreds of Greenpoint artists and designers will open their studio doors this Saturday and Sunday (June 1 & 2). I’ll be setting up sidewalk sale style out front of 57 Meserole Ave. from 12pm-6pm both days.

“Poodle” comes from the word “pudel”, meaning puddle in German. Poodles are excellent swimmers and were originally used as hunting dogs to retrieve waterfowl. The fancy haircut used to be more than just fashion. Hunters would thin the coat out to so all that wet fur didn’t weigh down the dog, while strategically keeping mounds of hair over the joints to keep them warm in cold water.
When you picture a poodle, you probably think of a solid color coat, but the Parti Poodle (part-colored) was the standard coloring for poodles up until the early 1900’s. The first dog book published in the united states in 1856 showed a black and white parti poodle as the breed standard.

Aussies were actually first bred by the Basques in Spain. They brought the dogs to Australia before sailing with them to California where the breed was perfected. Native Americans believed the dogs to be sacred and called them “ghost eye” because they often have a mismatched bright blue eye.

Bull Terriers have a very distinct egg shaped head and triangular eyes from the strong wide face of a bull dog mixed with a longer snout of a terrier. They were bred as pets, but got a bad rap early on because they were mistreated as fighting dogs. Today, Bull Terriers are known as the class clown of dog breeds for their love to play and their goofy, aloof personalities.

Rottweilers are one of the oldest herding breeds dating back to the Roman Empire. Due to the lack of refrigeration, armies would bring livestock with them as they traveled and used the dogs to heard and guard the cattle. Around 74 A.D. they traveled across the Alps and into what is now southern Germany. Once settled, the dogs worked for butchers taking meat and cattle to markets in Rottweil, Germany where the breed became know as Rottweiler Metzgerhunds, or "Butchers' Dogs".

Each scene of this Stoop Dog animation comes from detail shots of the 18” x 24” screen print. Some past and present family dogs slipped in there include Harry playing the guitar, Kate the English setter tapping her paw, Townes the Cheagle rolling dice, and George the basset winning the pot.

This Stoop Dogs print was created over the past couple of months while stuck inside during quarantine. The dog parks were locked up and hanging out with friends wasn’t happening so I guess this was a cross between my dog and I wishing for better times this summer. We’re not there yet but hopefully we’ll be able to all hang out with the homies soon!
This 5 color screen print is printed on the signature paper appropriately titled “Hair of the Dog”.🐶🐕🍻
