RNRR: Hi guys! Welcome to Spotlight, would you like to introduce the band and it’s members to our readers who may be unfamiliar with your work?
PANT: Hey! We’re Pant. We’re a rock and roll band from New York and we have Morgan Davis on guitar and vocals, Frank Bubbico on Bass and lead vocals, Maddy Edwards on drums, and Lucien Shelly on guitar and vocals.
RNRR: A pleasure to meet you all! How long have you been a band? Tell us a little more about how you formed as a group?
PANT: So Morgan and I went to high school together and we both started pant in 2017. We’ve had other members in the past, but we met frank in 2018 after I (Lucien) put up an audition ad in our local guitar store, Division Street Guitars. Through Frank we met Maddy in 2021. So Pant has been around since 2017, but it was really just a silly high school band. In the past two years is when we got serious.

Back on the 14th of January; Hamish Hutcheson, Niall Goldie, Conor Goldie, Carlo Kriekaard and Alex Pearson; five Scots residing from Glasgow - better known as VLURE, released their 5 track EP ‘Euphoria’.
Combining Indie with Electropunk, it feels as though VLURE are taking us on a journey back to the 90’s with this EP. With clear inspiration from the likes of The Prodigy and Underworld, the band attempt to restore rave culture back to its origins and educate their listeners in the process.
Like strapping dynamite to a vault in Fort Knox, the EP makes an explosive entrance with its empowering opening track ‘Show Me How to Live Again’. You’ve heard the slogan ‘If Carlsberg did…’, well I’ve got a new one ‘If Begbie from Trainspotting did…’, and if Begbie from Trainspotting did FIFA Football game soundtracks, well it would sound a lot like this.
Although minimal with its lyrical content, the song celebrates a post lockdown society. It is a rally call, gathering up the troops and encouraging the youth to invade the late-night town and take back what is rightfully theirs. Furthermore, as Hutcheson repeatedly roars the six-word title with such passion and aggression, it is clear he is using the track as a platform to protest the government’s amoral authority.

DEATH: Heartbreaking news today as drummer Taylor Hawkins has passed away aged 50. Hawkins was the drummer of American band Foo Fighters, having been with the band since 1997, three years after it’s inception. A massive and sudden loss for the musical world.

RNRR: In three words, how would you describe ‘Lover’?
LB: Ballsy, groovy and heart-felt.
RNRR: So, what’s ‘Lover’ really about?
LB: It’s written in a way that’s sort of a difficult relationship and you feel like you’re building towards like this big breakdown in communication, a big fall out. The track aims to build tensions throughout, that feeling of uneased, it’s not right and you can’t figure out what’s gone wrong. Then it all kicks off in the middle when the lads join me and that’s kinda like the big fall out moment when everything kicks off, it puts things in perspective.
RNRR: With ‘Lover’, how long did the song process take? Comparing with other tracks, too.
LB: So, the track started out with that sort of peddling one note guitar part that fall throughout all the verses, and then the main riff section just come about. I knew I wanted to do a breakdown there and make this moment, but the lead guitar wasn’t in there. I sat down and we wanted to make something hooky and repetitive. The main sort of line came about in the studio really, the track we had to play around with. We’d always really liked it but didn’t know how to make it a tune, I think that’s why the structure is a bit weird on it, but I kinda love it for it. It’s short but not too short, short enough in a way that’s like when people listen to it they go “f**k” and wish it had been longer.

Four secondary school mates from around the UK but just like steel, Lostboy was born in Sheffield. Lostboy are an indie rock band composed of four secondary school friends: Max Clutterbuck (singer/songwriter), Jack Berry (lead guitar), Henry Robinson (bass) and Ethan Reeves (drums). They released their first EP ‘Luna’ in 2019 which featured the tracks ‘Luna’ and ‘Lita’s Place’. Once they started making music, luckily for us, they couldn’t stop! Over the space of a few months Lostboy were releasing one track after the other within just a matter of weeks between. For a band with a small fan base on the rise, this was an incredibly achievement. This is a band that seems they won’t stop til they’ve got exactly what they want.

RNRR: Hi Sunday Crisp! How are you all doing? Would you mind introducing yourselves and your style of music to those reading who may be unfamiliar with your work?
SC: Wassup Rock N Roll Reports! We're feeling very good and we hope you do too. We're Sunday Crisp, a band from Sherbrooke QC. Eddy Lava sings the tunes and strums the rythm guitar, Edwin "Duke" Morino plays sick licks on the lead guitar, Henry Magma rocks the bass and Denis Plasma mauls the drums and writes poetry. We also invite Dwig Domimos on the keys quite often, he's an okay guy! We'd describe our music as a mix between surf rock/indie rock and garage pop. It's always accompanied by lyrics that outline our urge to live life to the fullest.
RNRR: Now I see garage rock and indie all mentioned there which always makes me think of The Strokes. Who would you say your own musical inspirations are and how have they affected the band?
SC: Our biggest inspiration assuredly is Kiss. You just gotta admire the stage presence and the fact that you bang your head on simplistic tunes and lyrics. They just really understood and exploited the mechanics of rock music and business to the maximum. We often find ourselves wondering what Kiss would do in a given situation. Apart from that, we're big fans of Nickelback, Backstreet Boys and Destiny's Child. Our band really shines during live performances and we always strive to make shows that are as great and memorable as the ones from these bands.

BIRTHDAY: Today would have been George Harrison’s 79th birthday. The musician was of course best known as the lead guitarist of Liverpool rock n roll band The Beatles. Known as the “quiet Beatle”, Harrison also went on to forge a highly successful solo career embracing Indian culture as well as joining supergroup The Traveling Wilburys in his later years. Today of al days, Rock N Roll Reports remembers one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Back on the 29th of October last year, the front man of The Verve, and one of Manchester’s very own; Richard Ashcroft released 'Acoustic Hymns Vol 1.'. The album consisted of 12 acoustic covers of some of his previous and greatest work, both solo and with the band.
For anybody who has read any of my previous work, you will know that I am very much a man of tradition. So, whenever I put pen to paper and delve into a new album, I always like to begin with the first track.
The first track on this album, and although somewhat predictable is 1997’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ from 'Urban Hymns'. However, on this occasion we will not judge because… well, it’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’. I totally understand why Richard decided to introduce the album with this, and how right he was in doing so.
Not only is this the signature song of both Richard's and The Verve's career; it’s just a magnificent masterpiece from start to finish. But those famous strings throughout (made famous by Andrew Loog Orchestras’ cover of The Rolling Stones' 'The Last Time'), illustrates that this song has always shown incredible potential as an acoustic track. Combine that with the numerous acoustic performances Ashcroft has done of this song in the past, whether it be on radio stations or live gigs, it has always been certified gold dust. Suffice to say, going into an actual studio to record it didn’t impact Ashcroft in the slightest.

RNRR: Hi 0Stella! How are you doing? Another year’s gone by since our last chat! I make this the third New Year’s interview we’ve done? Lovely to have you back!
0Stella: Hi Ed! Happy new year! Thanks for having me back. So glad I'm still standing after the years we've had!
RNRR: So first of all, how was your Christmas? Did you do anything special and more importantly, how sober did you keep it?
0Stella: [Laughs] I kept it mostly sober! It was lovely and quiet, gathering-wise, but in my intimate wisdom, I had decided to release my first new song in almost a year on New Years' Eve, so I've been flat out throughout the holidays!
RNRR: Of course you did and it is brilliant to have you back releasing music! Why don’t you talk us through the process of making ‘Glitter On The Dancefloor’ and on why you left it a year before releasing?
0Stella: I wrote ‘Glitter On The Dancefloor’ with my producer from 'Little Yes, Little Know', Juno nominated Brad Simons. I was experimenting with a new sound on 'Glitter on The Dancefloor’ as well as two others, 'Weightless' and 'Spark'.
RNRR: What pushed you to try a new sound and experiment? As an artist, do you find it more fulfilling with trying different sounds and genres?
0Stella: I wanted to write something fun like ‘Heads Will Roll’ by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. So many of my formative years were spent going to see concerts in The Point theatre (now 02 Arena) in Dublin and Carling Academy in Brixton as well as lots of dancing in my favourite gay clubs. This song is a tribute to those sweaty nights where your only concern was how long your feet could keep holding you up. I can't wait for those days to come back.

DEATH: On this day back in 2018, The Kinks’ bassist Jim Rodford sadly passed away. Rodford joined the English rock group in 1978 and served with the band until their dissolution in 1997. Rodford also played with The Zombies later on in his career acting as bassist for them too.

I first came across Brighton band Tigercub a couple of years ago when I listened to their debut album, ‘Abstract Figures in the Dark’. This album, released in 2016, did something that very few albums can manage these days- keep the listener hooked all the way through, track by track. Yes this is seemingly something one would come to expect from an album but finding it is another challenge all together. I remember thinking what this band do so well is they keep the style fresh. From song to song, thematically or lyrically the band switch from the dark, such as ‘By Design’ to the lighter sounding songs, such as ‘Up in Smoke’, effortlessly. Naturally, I knew that when I heard that the band were releasing their latest single, ‘I.W.G.F.U.’, yesterday, I had to listen and see if the magic remained. It didn’t disappoint.
