One of the probable reasons your CV is not getting you interviews is because you are more interested in listing your technical skills, educational background, and certifications.

I recently discovered that many interviewers are more interested in your “soft skills” and how you have used them in your previous work experiences. But most of us just list our soft skills without showing them.

Instead of just stating on your CV that you are a team player, great communicator or that you have leadership skills, you need to use action words in describing what you have achieved with those skills.

These descriptions should be highlighted under what you did in your previous workplace.

Here are a few examples to guide you:

1. To show critical thinking as a skill, use action words like Analyze, Design, Implement. (E.g. Analyzed customer data to design a new workflow for the UX team)

2. To show time management as a skill, use words like Prioritize, Delegate, Meet Deadlines. (E.g. Managed multiple client projects through consistent prioritization and delegation)

3. To show communication as a skill, use words like Presenting, Negotiating, Engagement. (E.g. Facilitate and present monthly training to the customer service team)

4. To show leadership as a skill, use words like Mentor, Lead, Manage. (E.g. Designed and led the implementation of quarterly objectives for XYZ project)

5. To show teamwork as a skill, you should use words like Collaborate, Support, Contribute. (E.g. Collaborated with the marketing team to create relevant social media communication for XYZ product.)

These are one of the key things that make your CV look professional and proves that you have real experience which will get any interviewer wanting to talk to you.

Please note that you can use this even as a fresh graduate. Just ensure that you have engaged yourself in lots of volunteering experiences and other relevant projects that gave you the opportunity to express these skills.

In all, be productive wherever you are, so you can have something tangible to add to your CV or talk about at interviews.

Wishing you all the best as you put out your CVs again this week.

How many bank accounts do you have?

In my early 20s, I used to wonder why an uncle and other older adults operated multiple bank accounts.
To me, running multiple accounts was an unnecessary show-off and stress. So, I stayed loyal to my Access bank until I came across an article online a few years ago that showed me how having up to 4 accounts can help me manage money better.
At the time, I was really struggling with financial discipline, so it made sense to use that advice.
Today, I have 4 accounts that I use to manage my spending and saving. I will be sharing this approach to help anyone (especially salary earners) who also needs financial discipline.
The idea is simple.
Pick four banks that you like or run different accounts with 1 or 2 banks that you love.
Next is to assign a unique purpose to each account using the A B C D format.
A is for Activities: This is the account you dedicate to all fun activities, relaxations, or experiences you enjoy regularly. It’s basically your “chop-life” account for shopping, hanging out with friends, etc. Ensure you only transfer what you have budgeted for monthly enjoyment activities in the debit card of this account. That way, you won’t overshoot your budget. Na where the money finishes you go stop for that month, no matter the temptation. 😂

B is for Bills/Billings: Every adult has bills to pay and must plan for them. This account should be dedicated to your recurring monthly bills like airtime, electricity bills, fuel, gas, black tax, etc. I advise that you should make this your salary account, from which you transfer to other accounts based on your budget and savings plan. Money that is not for spending should not be in this account. A little game you can play with this account (and the one above) is to try and ensure you don’t get the balance to zero before your next salary. It will help you know how “stingy” you can be. 😂

C is for Crisis: This savings account helps you prepare for sudden crises or emergencies. It is where you should keep your emergency fund. I wrote about emergency funds a few weeks ago. You can look for it and see how it works. It is very important to have this by the side for rainy days.

D is for Dreams: This is the account you should dedicate to life, career, finances, or any other development goals you want to achieve. It would be where you save for things like a car, a property, Japa plans, investment plans, etc. This is the kind of account you run on platforms like Piggyvest, Cowrywise, and others. The purpose is to use this account to meet your life goals.

With these 4 accounts, you will easily budget and maintain financial discipline that stops you from wondering what happened to your salary before the 15th of the next month. 😂
You should try it.

If Someone has a Job as a hiring manager or a recruiter.

Their Job is secure when they hire people for the companies they hire for.

They succeed more when they hire competent people.

So you reaching out to them is not you bugging them.
They are doing their Job also.

When you are invited for a job interview, at the entrance of the gate or within the Organization's premises:

1.Politely greet everybody. I have seen MDs and Managers disguise and stand at the gate to observe interviewees.

2. Do not go inside and start charging your phone or begin to look for where to charge your phone.

3. Do not go inside and begin to chat with your phone or make unnecessary calls. Put the phone inside your bag. They could be monitoring you through the camera.

4. Avoid too much talk with fellow interviewees. Don't go there and begin to argue about Nigeria, APC, PDP, Tinubu, Atiku and Peter Obi. Just be calm and positive.

5. Don't start praying and speaking in tongues to demonstrate your religiosity and closeness to God. Pray at home before going.

6. If they offer you Tea or food, Please reject it politely and thank them. You can take after the interview. If you take that Tea or food, you are out.

7. Don't chew gum, biscuit or anything. Go with a book and be reading it.

8. Never ever criticise your previous employer.

9. If you see somebody you know in the Organization, either as a staff or a fellow interviewee, greet him officially. Avoid creating an impression that you know him.

10. Do not appear too Poor, helpless and inferior before the interviewer. Forget about Nigeria problems, your personal and family problems. Focus on the job.

11. After the interview, put up a smiling face, thank them and leave.

In most cases, interviewers assess and score interviewees by the factors above and not necessarily by the answers they provide on paper. They'll train you eventually to do the job if they employ you.

Living below your means is defined simply as living on less than you make.
Spending less than you make creates more wiggle room in cash flow, which relieves financial strain and allows you to allocate the money left over each month to build wealth.
