2002 - write something
2004 - write something that entertains my friends
2008 - write something that gets me paid
2012 - write something that won’t get me fired
2018 - write something that’s not motivated by outside forces
2022 - write something i can trust
if you’re a young songwriter, do NOT follow this timeline as a model for success. there’s no one-size-fits-all business model for success in any industry- and keep in mind, ‘success’ is subjective. hell, music is subjective! i’m no expert and still have heaps to learn, but when i’m asked, “what advice would you give your younger self?,” i usually rattle on with the following: be careful with whom you take advice from and to what you attach your name. you’ll make mistakes, but fight the urge to self-publish until you’ve developed your writing voice with hundreds of tunes under your belt. ‘perspective’ and ‘experience’ are far better writing tools than any musical instrument, software, or app. show up every morning and write like it’s your job- even before it’s your job. and above all else, remember that ‘time’ will always help to soften the rougher edges.

like father, like daughter
thanks for such a perfect gift
“hangs the moon” was originally intended to open the b-side of the record. my goal was to write a piece that translated the lyrical themes of the album (finding hope in often overlooked places, navigating uncertainty, and reckoning with the way we treat one another) without words- and in less than a minute.

‘the art of collecting’ is out today and i’m full of gratitude to my friends for helping me make this record: jon estes, Molly Parden, Jeremy Fetzer, Spencer Cullum Jr., Jon Radford, Steelism, Parachute Mastering, matthew calvis, and Fetzer Design. you’re all such beautiful humans. thanks for sharing your deep talents and generous hearts. the album is dedicated to the late erin starks, who’s selflessness, strength, and friendship still touch me on a daily basis. additional love for ever kipp, Tiny Human, Curious Palette Creative, chris connelly, liz &, ivy estes, Qrates, TuneCore, big eyes records, and to my wife, Sarah Schneider, who’s grace and patience are otherworldly- and without whom the music wouldn’t exist. lastly, a very special ‘thanks’ to all of you out there for listening
