The Rev. James Lawson passed away this week. He was an early leader of the Civil Rights movement, active in Nashville and other places. He is mentioned as a mentor and leader by may other Civil Rights leaders, including Rep. John Lewis and Rev. Harold Thurman.

James Lawson James Morris Lawson Jr. was an American activist and university professor. He was a leading theoretician and tactician of nonviolence within the Civil Rights Movement. During the 1960s, he served as a mentor to the Nashville Student Movement and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
