We are thrilled to announce two new dates for “WOVEN LIVES OAXACA: FOLLOWING THE THREAD”, a Hands-On Immersion in the Culture and Textile Traditions of Oaxaca: January 29-February 6, 2025 & August 20-28, 2025
Join Ana Paula Fuentes and Professor Carolyn Smythe Kallenborn in Oaxaca for a fascinating deep dive into the art of weaving in Oaxaca with a focus on the transformations over the past fifteen years.
On our 7-day journey, we will visit artisans in their studios, study their work up close, learn techniques in hands-on workshops. Throughout, we will have a chance to discuss the impact of the global economy, pandemic and social media and the challenges and opportunities that have come with them.
This immersive experience will give you a chance to get to know extraordinary artisans and extraordinary fellow travelers!

I just returned from a week of mushroom foraging in the Sierra Nortes of Oaxaca, Mexico, and created this color palette from our finds during a community demonstration in the mountain town of El Carrizal.
Here are the mushrooms from the top:
- Ompholotus mexicana (alum mordant)
- Phaeollus schweinitzii (alum/ iron mordant)
- Usnea (no mordant)
- Boletus reticulatus/ porcini (alum/ iron mordant)
- Gymnopilus (alum mordant)
- Hypholoma fasculare (alum/ iron mordant)
