Here’s a bit from my newsletter about the story, and it’s origins.

C.J. Piperata here! As some of you may remember (or not), I promised to release some short stories as I pecked away at my novel series this spring. This short, in particular, was one of those cathartic pieces of writing for me. It's quite child-like, and no more than a 30 minute read. There are talking animals, (imagined) British narrators, and a plethora of things only found in children's literature. But... the theme is grown up. It's a children's story for grown ups, about the harsh reality of the world. A theme which I didn't know until I wrote it.
Today is the official anniversary of my mother's passing. She went into the hospital suddenly on St. Patricks Day when I was twenty one years old, and never made it out. After I wrote this story... I realized that her voice... her song... well, she was my very first starling. The very first voice that meant safety in a scary, unsafe world. Even now... when I really listen... I can still hear her. I can hear all of the voices (not literally, don't call an ambulance) that are sent to me that whisper of wisdom, experience, and faith. Because in the end, with enough humility and willingness to learn, every circumstance can work out for our good and our growth. If we listen. If we stop judging everything and if we reject pride. It never fails, no matter how devastating that circumstance is.

THE FOX AND THE FLEA

The Fox and the Flea is a timeless tale about all of the things we are powerless to control, and the judgements we can make out of frustration and fear. Judgements even, about ourselves.
Embark on an adventure with the incomparable Mr. Flea as he becomes aware of the world around him, enjoying the wonderful things in his simple life, yet feeling a deep empathy for the for the tragic. With a sensitive and contemplative heart, Mr. Flea grows weary of all that he can't control. With no power to help those around him, his empathy turns to guilt, and guilt gives way to anger— especially when the circle of life ends in death.
But then a wonderful thing happens; a new friend shows up— well, several friends in truth. The forest might have seemed a mundane place before, but the truth is, mundane is a thing it never was. The forest had always been a silent dance of wisdom and magic, just patiently waiting for his heart to stir.
Mr. Flea's extraordinary journey turns his guilt and anger to acceptance and faith, finding love and wisdom along the way. And the most important friends he had, were the friends he hadn't known— but even though he didn't know them, they loved him all the same.

This is hysterical. I’m “marrying a king and my father is a king.” Hey… I didn’t claim it… my phones word suggestions did 😂
