My most recent blog post: "Striking a Balance."
Striking A Balance We live in an age of extremes. Movies are considered to be failures if they aren’t bigger blockbusters than the last. The wealthy have gone from millionaires to billionaires. On the opposite extreme, homelessness has exploded. The weather has become more extreme due to climate change.

Elders Of The Craft – Isaac Bonewits Philip Emmons Isaac Bonewits was born October 1, 1949, in Royal Oak, Michigan — the perfect place, he liked to joke, for a future Archdruid. If you're not a practitioner of modern Druidry, Wicca or various other spiritual paths that take their...

My most recent blog post: "New Year and Kalendae"
New Year and Kalendae Initially, the ancient Romans celebrated the start of the new year on March 15 because that was the date that state officials took office. The Babylonian New Year was similar in that it was close to mid-March, being that it occurred on the first New Moon after the Spring equinox.
Today is an ancient Roman festival called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, or the Birthday of the Invincible Sun. This festival occurs on Dec 25th, which was the winter solstice according to the Roman calendar set by Julius Ceasar.
It was first held in 274 CE as part of a new Imperial religion established by the emperor Aurelian named Sol Invictus. He had intended Sol Invictus to unify the various Sun-based religions found in Rome and the Empire's different cultures.
The Sun has long been a symbol of hope and renewal. Therefore, I see this as one of several festivals during a season where we remember the past and look to the promise and potential of the upcoming new year.

Sorrow The American statesman, Founding Father, and all-around genius Benjamin Franklin once wrote that death and taxes are the only guaranteed things in this world. Recently, I was reminded of the truth of his statement.
My most recent blog post: "Proselytizing."
Proselytizing As a critic of monotheism, I must fight the tendency to lump all monotheist religious traditions together. This is especially true about the Big Three Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. There are important differences between them.
Why not both?
There are many good reasons to choose either to be a vegetarian or vegan. This is not one of them.
