January 31, 1959. The Night Bob Dylan Saw Buddy Holly :
“I just wanted to say that one time when I was about 16 or 17 years old I went to see Buddy Holly play at the Duluth National Guard Armory. I was 3 feet away from him and he looked at me. I just have some kind of feeling, I don’t know how or why I know he was with us the whole time we were making this record in some kind of way.”

On January 31, 1959 a young teenager by the name of Robert Zimmerman would see Rock and Roll star Buddy Holly live during his tour known as The Winter Dance Party. Obviously seeing Buddy that night would leave an indelible mark on the young teenager since he would mention the encounter almost 40 years later during a speech at the Grammy Awards.
That teenager would later become arguably the most influential songwriter of all time changing his name to Bob Dylan. And as his career proves, even though he started out as a folk singer/songwriter, the influence that Buddy had on him would flourish in the mid to late 1960s when he went electric, and started recording rock and roll music.
That night at 22 years old Buddy Holly had already created the template of of how rock music would thrive into the next decade of being an artist writing and recording his own music. Bob Dylan would take that template to new heights under 6 years later.
Just over 48 hours after this show Buddy Holly would be gone. But as Bob Dylan proves his music and influence continues to live on all these years later.
