I can be out tomorrow or following weekends to till your garden, clean up your gravel drive, bush hog your pasture, or dig holes for your upcoming projects. Other services can be discussed as well.
Let’s get you on the calendar before it fills up!
Tomorrow is the first official day of fall!
We spent the afternoon cleaning and getting the coop ready for winter. Last year we put it off until it was already cold and it was not fun.
Also if you are not using cinnamon in your coops I highly suggest it! 🧡
Anyone need any end of summer bush hogging done?
Critters N Curls Homestead can get you taken care of.
My first thought was my strawberry jam was a waste because it did not set up all the way. My second was strawberry sweet tea & pancake syrup 🍓
It’s so hot out so why not can up some hot peppers & use up your leftover brine for pickled red cabbage & onion 😍
Best sound is hearing all 7 pop ♥️
Watermelon radishes, gooseberries & black raspberries keep these littles happy ♥️
Gooseberries are coming on beautifully ♥️
Can’t you guess who was responsible for eating 2 of our cabbage plants?!
I can… 3 white leghorns pullets 🥴😫😂
Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers out there!
As a rule of thumb our garden does not go in until the weekend of Mother’s Day. I’ve heard it since I was little. So today we have be busy getting everything we can in the ground. Cannot wait to see the fruits of our labor!
Since our second garden is out back my husband so kindly offered to help me get my wagon out there. 😂😂
Spring Cornish Cross made it to 8 weeks Sunday and to the freezer! I would be lying if I said it was not a long 48 hours but we are so happy and thankful for the amount we got from them.
Last year we did about half of the birds whole and the other half we parted out. We did not go through the whole birds as fast so this go around we cut up all the chickens.
We had some friends come out to see how it all goes and help out! We appreciate their willingness to help and learn our process! Our girls were also here running around and joining in on processing day. They could probably teach someone how it all works by now. Actually I know with their personalities and love for this life they would absolutely do it and love it.
All the chickens weighed roughly 4-5 lbs dressed. We get 10 pieces when cutting them up (11 if you count the carcass for broth). 2 drumsticks, 2 thighs, 2 breast, 2 wings and 2 tenderloins. This was our largest group we’ve done so we are curious to see how long this lasts. Highly recommend CC if you are wanting to get meat birds. They have an extremely efficient feed to meat conversion ratio.
Our daughter’s kindergarten class hatched chicks. Of course being the little chicken lover she is our daughter asked to bring them all home. We discussed it and decided I would write a note that said if they did not have anyone else to take them that we would take what was left. I was thinking….they had 16 hatch I am sure all these kids talked their parents into taking them home!
Today we welcomed 7 little mystery chicks to the homestead. I cannot wait to see what they look like when they get feathers. Secretly I’m as excited as her to bring new babies home!
Week 6 & 7 of the CC. They are still gaining steadily and doing good! A little harder to get on the scale but we got it! Most people talk about how sickly and a pain these birds are to raise. We keep them on a feeding schedule to lessen the risk of heart attacks or leg issues. This group of roosters have been healthy and active and even a little feisty in the morning when they think they are starving. They do drink constantly and eat a lot of food plus you have to move their tractor at least once a day if not 2 times. It is worth it in the end and I would not hesitate to order more in the future!
It was a little cold this morning but we were still out getting your gardens ready!
Thank you to Nicole Mike Messer and Ron Perdue for letting us help out with this years garden.
There is still time to get your garden ready, message the Critters N Curls Homestead page or Shane Smith for a quote.
You can also help us out by sharing this post.
CC are officially 5 weeks. Healthy and growing great!
Today has solidified the decision we made about a month ago.
We sold our camper and gave up the the weekends at the campground we have loved so much over the years.
It was not a decision we took lightly because of all the memories and experiences we have had as a family camping. We know eventually we will camp again but right now our focus is here at Critters N Curls Homestead.
There are so many things we want/need to do around here but soaking in the day and enjoying this spring weather was a must. After chores & errands the girls have spent the day in their pool, running around out back, and loving on every animal they can. Our silkie chicks have been able to have grass time. One litter of baby rabbits are close to being weaned & another have made their way out of their nest box. The chickens are loving all the green grass and flowers coming up and laying about 32-35 eggs a day. Shane has tilled up many gardens and still has room to get a few more in! He found a bush hog to add to the tractor implement collection. Seedlings are looking great and I’m counting down the days to get to plant. Getting life ready for the abundance of vegetables we pray to get and store up for winter.
Thank you for all the support and love we have received! We truly appreciate it!♥️
We hatched chicks at the Henry County YMCA Preschool this week. The kids have enjoyed it so much and the chicks have a a cozy new home to go to! So happy we were able to do this!
Crazy the difference a week can make. They are right on track for weight and loving being out in the grass this past week.
Critters N Curls Homestead wants to wish you and your family a Happy Easter tomorrow.
“May the miracle of Easter bring you renewed hope, faith, love and joy. “
♥️
Yesterday we reached the 100 follower milestone!!
Thank you all for all of the support and joining us on this journey!
This week we have let the baby bunnies play in the grass and our hens continue to produce beautiful and delicious fresh eggs!
We have decided to lower our egg prices to $3/dozen and currently have 12 dozen available!
Garden season is my favorite season and it is here!!
Shane has tilled 2 of our gardens with one more to go. This is a little before, during & after of our small garden area that used to be all raised beds.
If you need your garden tilled or want to get an area started let us know. We will help! Private message us and we can discuss it!
We appreciate all the support! ♥️
Scarface is a beautiful girl but she’s known to be a little grumpy at times. 😂😍
This pretty Momma has made a few girls mad by stealing their eggs. Even with multiple nesting boxes and laying areas they all want the same spot. ♥️
We received our very own chicken plucker today! We will be puting it to the test in around 5 weeks!
Thank you Grassy Fork Acres for sharing your plucker with us in the past! This is just another example of how supportive the homesteading community can be.
