As part of Dyspraxia DCD Awareness Week the advocate Sophie from Personal Training with Dyspraxia
is discussing her personal experiences. The post below is very interesting and shines a light on an aspect of Dyspraxia that some may experience and others may not be aware of.
One of my biggest struggles: Dyspraxia and Emotional Regulation.
This is the aspect of dyspraxia that can be construed as immaturity.
I have big struggles with regulating my emotions. It's not uncommon for me to experience multiple emotions within minutes of each other. I can go from crying to anger to elation or that type of nervous excitement that makes you feel the need to laugh every time you breathe in, in the same conversation.
I experience intrusive thoughts a lot and end up feeling enraged or terrified at a scenario that hasn't even happened.
Emotional regulation challenges doesn't mean just crying easily, but as this is what people see most visibly and often, it can lead to be being called immature as an insult. It has led to breakdowns in friendships in younger years as I would get cross or sad very easily and the other person may have just been having what they thought was a harmless tease.
I wear my heart on my sleeve and I can feel stupid for doing that when most people don't do that.
I cry at babies being born in TV shows, puppies crying etc. I could watch the same movie fifteen times over and still cry with emotion at exactly the same parts, even though I know what is coming 🤣
Emotional regulation challenges is an area that I think is overlooked a lot, as there is a primary focus on physical symptoms of dyspraxia.
Couple emotional regulation challenges with sensory challenges on the same day and it's exhausting.
Looking forward to the Zoom tonight! ☺️☺️
