ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Daniel Benedum
Oil Paintings
"The focus of this work is on community relationships through the lens of public spaces. In an expressive documentation using oil paint, this work celebrates and commemorates the everyday spaces that someone may pass through on their day. The spaces chosen reflect different experiences in and around the Twin Cities community, including different bars, stores, construction zones, and architectural elements. The viewer may sense a level of familiarity within the paintings that relates to their own life. My practice involves photographing spaces within my own community and then recreating them as paintings. The paintings exaggerate color in an atmospheric manner in each individual space. Patterning, line and color blocking are used to add dimension in an abstactive manner."
All are invited to two art events on Payne Avenue this coming Friday, March 18, celebrating color and the coming of spring!

Roshan Ganu is creating an intimate get together to celebrate Holi, the Indian festival of colors and the coming of spring. This celebration is in collaboration with Constanza Carballo and her curated show commemorating International Women’s Day, which will also be open to the public during this time.
Friday, March 18, 4-7 PM
1128 Payne Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55130
Join current resident Roshan Ganu at her intimate Holi get together at Second Shift next Friday March 18, 2022. You will have the opportunity to contribute to a communal rangoli made with coloured powder and semolina, drawn with bare fingers (see example in the image). Rangoli patterns are ephemeral and temporary and will be wiped out the following day.
This get together is in collaboration with Constanza Carballo and her curated show commemorating International Women’s Day, which will also be open to the public during this time.
What will happen between 4pm-7pm:
1. Live, communal rangoli making with Roshan Ganu. Roshan will show you basic finger techniques to Harold and draw with the powder
2. Live printmaking with Constanza Carballo and Lynda Grafito. Take the prints home with you
3. Chaya (Chai) and snacks
4. Music/videos played during holi
Roshan says, “What I love about Holi is carefree use of colour: on the face, on the clothes, in our lives. This colour takes days to get rid of, but then again, why would you get rid of colour from your clothes and faces?”
INTRODUCING OUR NEW LOGO!
The Payne Arcade Business Association (PABA - Payne Arcade Paba), in collaboration with the East Side Neighborhood Development Company(ESNDC), and in conjunction with their joint Payne Area Reboot initiative, is pleased announce the launch of a fresh branding campaign for our district:
“PAYNE + ARCADE | UNIQUELY EAST SIDE”
The fresh brand includes a new logo, designed to reflect the vibrant intersection of people, neighborhood and businesses that make our corner of St Paul so unique and colorful. The logo seeks to capture the rich mix of well-established anchor businesses and new emerging businesses in a way that is modern, yet traditional. The brand messaging to be rolled out over the next couple of months will invite and entice patrons and visitors to explore and experience a welcoming place that embraces all cultures, ethnicities, and social backgrounds. It will also highlight the pride of a resilient and creative community that is ready to open the next chapter of its storied history.
The launch of our new logo and brand coincides with the Payne Arcade Business Association (PABA) celebrating its 100th year of working together as a business community and giving back to the community! Ushering in the next 100 years, we are focused more than ever on building upon our Eastside traditions of collaboration and success, to the benefit of our entire community.
Specific priority initiatives for 2022 include:
(1) an new website and updated social media presence to raise awareness and perception of our district, with content serving primarily patrons, neighbors, and visitors.
(2) placemaking efforts to enhance the visual appearance and appeal of the Payne + Arcade business district via signage and banners, coordinated decorations for festivals and holidays, and a refresh of the ‘Adopt-a-Block’ initiative to reduce trash and litter on our streets.
(3) a community and cultural festival in fall that combines the essence of the traditional Harvest Festival with the more recent Solidarity Street Gallery Art + Cultural Festival; and
(4) a quarterly series of networking events for business owners to meet, connect, and learn.
Our fresh logo and brand were carefully designed to incorporate and reflect significant input from the community. Some of that input came from community outreach in earlier stages on Payne Area Reboot initiative. A major portion of the input was assembled from a survey that was posted more recently on social media and was open to the public. We received a great wealth of ideas and suggestions from that survey and intend to leverage that into forthcoming branding stories.
The new logo design and brand were created in collaboration with Darren Varley of ‘dv creative,’ a business located on the East Side (http://www.darrenvarley.com/).
For any questions or inquiries, please send us a message, or contact us via e-mail at [email protected].

Benjamin Mason's unique, very personal and somewhat unruly pinhole photographs remind us how imperfect and fragile our human memory typically is - yet also showcase how a rather incomplete and deficient visual fragment can bring back clear recollections of important events and experiences in our lives.
PLEASE JOIN US for an evening of thought-provoking art, stimulating conversation, and light refreshments! You won't regret it.
Lifting up our community.
We are a small group of business owners and neighborhood development leaders whose aim is to lift up our community. Our intent – and primary focus – is to elevate the vitality of the business district in the Payne Area, the vibrancy of the emerging, community-centered arts and entertainment scene, and the prosperity of the workers and residents in the neighborhood. We are looking to promote collaborative entrepreneurship and supportive ecosystems to build a thriving, sustainable community of businesses. We want to create new jobs for neighborhood residents, paying fair wages. We are seeking to enable and nurture the growth and success of minority-owned businesses. We are targeting to attract and foster additional work-based learning opportunities for local youth. We are keen to ensure our commercial district reflects and serves the needs of our diverse neighborhood – and adds to the quality of life and sense of belonging of its residents. Our goal is to benefit all who live, work, shop, and own businesses in the district.
We are committed to development without displacement, and to honoring the rich diversity and multicultural heritage of our unique neighborhood. We are aware that thriving, sustainable communities are built on many essential foundations, including educational achievement, fair employment opportunities, equitable access to entrepreneurship, and economic self-sufficiency among residents. We recognize that targeting all these is beyond the scope and reach of a single grassroots initiative like ours. However, we believe that increasing economic vitality, pursued and implemented in an equitable and inclusive way, is an essential cornerstone towards raising opportunity, prosperity, and well-being for all.
We acknowledge the COVID-19 pandemic poses drastic challenges to all the businesses, workers and residents in our community. We are working on a few near-term events and initiatives that reflect our values of “neighbors helping neighbors.” Look out for further announcements to come out soon!
