We then had a little break before the first official course began, in which the waiters brought us home-baked bread with olive oil infused with lemon. Guys. This bread was the best bread I have ever tasted in my whole entire life…I’m still dreaming of the soft pillowy dough with the perfect outer crust. It was unbelievable and honestly I’d happily pay 300 again just for the bread – it was *that* good! The recipe is apparently a family recipe from Mirazur’s Italian-Argentinian Chef, Mauro Colagreco, and accompanying it is a very cute poem dedicated to bread.
We all ordered cocktails and snacks, I chose a Guavita cocktail which was a delicious and refreshing combination of gin, watermelon & guava shrub, with cardomom, pomegranate, lemon, jasmine, and soda. A few of the others chose the flamboyant looking Peacock Spirit! Snacks-wise we chose Amazonico’s Guacamole and the Cassava cheese bread – the guac was slightly better than mine (huge understatement, and I promise mine is pretty amazing), and although I only had a little nibble of the cheese bread because , it was incredibly moreish and I desperately wanted to devour the entire bowl of them!
Lockdown has brought on many challenges over the past few months – restaurants have been closed, jobs have been lost, and some places have sadly closed their doors for good due to the pandemic and enforced business closures. I spent the first two months of lockdown stuck in Devon at my parents place, and although I used that time to up my donations to some local charitable organisations, when I finally did get back to London I was super keen to support local businesses and my favourite eateries! I’ve been ordering-in twice a week, and when one of my favourite restaurants got in touch to ask if they could send me some of my favourite dishes (I had tried to order from them the week prior but was sadly 1-mile outside of their 2-mile delivery radius), I naturally said yes! So let me introduce you to Hakkasan at Home…
Food-wise we were in for a treat! We began by sharing the Hoisin Duck Scotch Egg which was out-of-this world good, but my goodness the mains were even better. I chose the Hackney Cheese Steak Burger, while the boyfriend chose the Buttermilk Chicken Burger, and each came with a side of Chickpea Fries which were unusual but tasty.
I then chose the Wild mushroom tart, fricassée of wild mushrooms and hazelnut sabayon to start, while Claire opted for the Grilled Galician octopus, sweet peppers and sea purslane. I had immediate food envy when I saw Claire’s ocoptus as it is one of my favourite foods, but as soon as I took a bite of the wild mushroom tart, I knew I’d made the right decision. It was really delicious, and a great veggie option.
You’ll notice throughout this review the huge amount of tuna we ordered, haha. I absolutely love raw tuna and it’s one of my favourites, but I don’t eat it very often because work don’t serve it to us due to the high mercury content in the fish. This means that when I eat out, especially at Japanese restaurants, I order a large amount of tuna. Anyway, our first tuna dish was the Tuna Tataki, perfectly seared and marinated, this was one of those dishes where I was on the edge of my seat hoping Nigel and Kristina would leave their portions so I could have more, hehe. Luckily Kristina left some of hers 😛
