Doing the messy, scary business 🖤

Maybe that’s where I excel 🥲 I have heard it consistently from my writers - both direct and indirectly - how Fng frustrating/debilitating/heartbreaking writing can be. The best writers through history have written TOMES on it. And you - reading this - whether you believe it or not, you’re probably a writer and you probably deal with this too.

Content writing, writing for websites and social media, are smaller versions of that. Hell, if you’ve been writing enough on Instagram you probably have enough there to start most of your book 👀

Anyway, I still don’t have it ✨all figured out ✨ but where’s the fun in that? Writing is a marathon, not a sprint, in the fabulous words of in her latest article! (Go read!)

But not all hope is lost - there’s still some good left in the world, and it’s worth fighting for! 🧙‍♂️ Let the project take its breath and head back when the time is right - just make sure you don’t wait too long!

Thankfully, the right group of people + proven frameworks can keep that from ever happening. I want to create that space! One of the more confusing, and certainly not exciting, parts of publishing a book - ISBNs!

Plenty of places offer free or discount ISBNs, just making things more complicated. Here’s a simple way to choose: if you’re experimenting or don’t care about selling to stores, use free ones all day (Amazon provides them, for example).

BUT! If you want to sell to stores and name your own publishing house, a legitimate ISBN from Bowker is key 🔑

I invested in the set of 10 since we plan on publishing more, and it’s completely worth it!

If you’re thinking of publishing, and really taking it to the next level - make sure you know the difference before just hitting “publish” on Amazon!

Honoring ancestors, decolonizing my mindset, and healing generational trauma for this and ✨🇲🇽🧡✊🏽

This year, I have been drained. Pandemic, riots, capital insurrections, resurgent white nationalism and my dumb ass moved out of Denver to a town where all my neighbors had “No more bu****it 2020” signs. I lost my job when things closed down, and there’s been little financial security since then.

All in this I’m heading into my , slowly accepting myself (anew) and trying to work through my flaws without spiraling into them. Summer’s ending, Halloween is here and I’ve done no prep. The point ➡️ Right now, we’re just getting by day by day.

Trying to heal, I don’t have to look back far to see where some of this pain came from. In trying to define myself and my role in the world, I have to define myself in the worlds terms: Mestiza, Mexican, Hispanic, Chicano, Latina, Latinx… How could I be Mexican when I was born in Texas, I wondered, most of my childhood.

So I’ve been studying further back, before anyone was “Mexican”. Growing up in Texas that word still sounds like a slur to me. Mexican. Less a status of nationality and more an insult. Dirty, dumb, poor Mexicans. Really they were/are largely indigenous, or mixed half and half, people, simply looking for an opportunity like everyone else.

I’m just now uncovering how deep these cultural themes have controlled the way I’ve seen myself and lived my life. For me, celebrating my Indigenous pride is the key to finding my Hispanic pride, and reconciling these opposing forces in me.

Sometimes, we fail 😜 Hopefully, we learn!

What I’ve realized this past month trying to launch my on-demand self publishing class is that - gasp - a lot of people actually DONT like to do things on their own!

I love DIY, maybe too much. I’ve always had a hard time letting go and accepting help from others 😅 of course I want to be helpful any way I can! (Hi, trauma! 👋)

So, when I started this whole writing thing with , that’s as far as I saw - trying to help someone I liked and admired in their creative dream.

It hasn’t gone exactly to plan (as plans do). Haven’t made any bestsellers or movie deals (yet!). But, other people quickly came out of the woodwork. Suddenly everyone I met was a writer, had a book idea since childhood, was collecting their poetry… you name it. It’s been a STRUGGLE - yet here we are - 5 books later and many more to go.

Humans are awesome, and weird, and crazy. We have this thing, the WORD, and how we use it determines so much in our lives. We’re compelled to see and be seen, save ourselves and carve our names somehow into the eternal hall of fame.

What you have to say matters, if in the very least- to you. That’s where it starts. Your voice deserves someone who will listen, a whole lot of people who will listen.

I love the internet. It’s where I learn, look at cute animals, meet awesome people and generally have a good time…⁠

Buuut I’m also always finding myself sick of it, having to take time off, losing energy about posting… I lose so much energy FROM posting, half the time I end up skipping it. I can agonize over every single word, overthink every image or picture, and it feels like it’s never enough ⁠

And when I’m working with clients on building their social medias, it’s a lot of the same. ⁠

🧿 Very little time, and what time/energy they have doesn’t want to be wasted on “marketing” (hello every creative type) ⁠
🧿 Feeds full of negativity, drama, time-wasters, etc (few deep connections) ⁠
🧿 Struggling and overwhelmed keeping up with the level of content that’s “required” to find “success” online⁠

I want to think I have the answers - engage, be authentic, don’t overthink things - but it always seems easier said than done. As a Virgo my mind is wired for perfection, something I just realized today really means: do your absolute best, right now, with what you have. ⁠

There’s never gonna be perfect. There’s never the perfect follower count: I’ve seen 6 figure businesses with 0 following and 6 figure IG pages that couldnt sell a free OF page 😂 (ok, maybe not that one) But you get my point! ⁠

Whatever you decide to do, I hope it comes easy. Not too easy, no. Put your best effort into that post, that tweet, cuz it’ll be there forever. But maybe let’s stop killing ourselves over it, m’kay? ⁠

And if yesterday’s little blackout reminded me of anything, it’s that as much as we may love it, IG, FB, whatever your platform - it’s still not guaranteed. Engage, create offline and cross-platform connections, and focus less on those numbers and more on your intrinsic value 💖 ⁠⁠⁠

When we’re hurting, sometimes we turn to the wrong things.
