What better way to celebrate than to announce our employee of the year, Jessica Ghencian! After eight years of working as a Dental Assistant, Jessica Ghencian redirected her career path to Wealth Management in 2020. Jessica began at GCG as a receptionist, but quickly became enthralled with the business and began working alongside advisors. She’s now the Business Manager to one of GCG Charlotte’s top producers, the Howe team, and continues to hone her expertise in insurance and client relations. Jessica is delighted to be surrounded each day by those that reflect what she is striving to become. When asked to share piece of advice for the women in finance, she believed the words of Greek philosopher Epictetus put it best in saying: “Every difficulty in life presents us with an opportunity to turn inward and to invoke our own inner resources. The trails we endure can and should introduce us to our strengths.-Dig deeply. You possess strengths you might not realize you have.”

“Is it better to use my income to pay off debt or save for retirement?”
While it’s typically best to pay off debt first, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t treat all debt equally. The trick to knowing when to prioritize debt over savings vs. savings over debt lies in whether it’s “good debt” or “bad debt,” as well as the interest rate associated with it.
You should also approach your debt payments strategically. For example, if you have a mortgage loan at 4% interest and your investment accounts are earning 6%, you should let your accounts ride and pay off your mortgage over time. But if you have credit card debt accruing an interest rate at 14%, it would be extremely beneficial to pay off the credit card first before making more contributions to your investment accounts.
It’s important to note that living within your means is crucial -- it makes credit card debt less likely and allows you to invest more of your money. How you manage your debt today plays a significant role in your retirement dreams. If you’re unsure about whether or not to pay off a particular debt, or would like a second opinion about your financial strategy, give our office a call. We’re here to help.

👉📊 The recent news of the traumatic conflict in the Middle East triggers feelings of both sorrow and fear, including fear of how this will impact financial markets.

The U.S. and global economies were already rattled by inflation and rising interest rates. With the news of the surprise attack by Palestine’s Hamas group on Israel (and Israel’s subsequent declaration of war), there are certainly worries about how this could impact financial markets. The fallout of this war will take time to be fully understood, but if the conflict spreads to the rest of the Middle East, there could be far-reaching concerns. Iran, specifically, supports Hamas and is a significant oil producer; if they become embroiled in this conflict, it will likely impact the price and availability of crude oil.

Just after the Hamas attack, crude prices jumped by about 4%, but that’s a typical “fear premium” market reaction based broadly on the speculation of higher risk. It wasn’t a huge increase, and prices readjusted over the following days. While none of us knows for certain how things will play out, investors are understandably watching closely to see the impact of these events on an already volatile market. And the potential for far-reaching and/or long-term effects can be especially worrisome for those who are following this crisis closely. Please know that we are continuously evaluating what it may mean for world and U.S. markets as well as your personal investments.

If you’re looking for more information to better understand the roots of this conflict, Financial Times put together a list of recommended books to help you understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: https://www.ft.com/content/0bdab111-19a5-47d4-b64d-226dd7699ad0

This past Saturday marked the first day of Autumn, and GCG Headquarters is heading into Q4 in proper Fall fashion! 🍂🍁

Warren Buffett once said, "I would tell [investors], don’t watch the market closely."
🍁🍂🍄
In recent weeks, oil prices have rallied higher, and the Fed indicated higher interest rates may be here for a while. And there’s a headline risk that lawmakers may struggle to get a budget passed, which may lead to a short-term government shutdown. If you listen to market pundits, it sounds like it’s going from bad to worse.
🍁🍂🍄
But August is over, September is ending, and next up is October–a month that has had its share of volatile moments over the years. It’s a seasonally weak period for stock prices, and that’s important to remember as stock prices churn a bit.
Summer ended on September 22, so take a break from scrutinizing stock prices and focus on enjoying your favorite fall activities.
🍁🍂🍄
If you want an update, please reach out to your financial advisor. Otherwise, it may be best to follow Warren’s advice and not watch too closely.
