🔸 Today, most drones are still controlled by a person on the ground, who has the aircraft in visual line of sight at all times (VLOS) and watches out for other air traffic. But in the future, if at some point not hundreds but hundreds of thousands of drones fly in the air at any given time, drones start to travel considerably longer distances and drones and manned aircraft start using the same airspace, that situation is no longer tenable. There must therefore be something like air traffic control (ATC) for drones, but highly automated. That’s U-space. 🔸

🔸 A flying taxi set to transport visitors to the 2024 Paris Olympic games made its first test flight on Monday.

The autonomous Volocopter 2X flew for four minutes at Le Bourget airport near the French capital.
Local authorities, public transportation companies and airport authorities in Paris are cooperating with the German manufacturer to provide an air taxi solution for the Olympic games. 🔸

🔸 The drone market has been identified as a potential area of economic growth throughout Europe and beyond. However, drones can be seen negatively, both due to connotations with military use, public concerns around privacy and safety and regulatory limits that prevent a number of uses.

This creates a challenge – what, exactly, are the barriers to drone use for commercial and public purposes. Is it possible for drone technologies to create genuine societal, commercial and, potentially, environment benefit? 🔸

🔸 EU-funded projects Flying Forward 2020, AiRMOUR and AURORA, have initiated a collaborative network of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) development programmes. This new coalition creates an end-to-end chain of Urban Air Mobility innovations and developments to improve the current urban airspace transport system in European cities.

🔸 The Urban Air Mobility (UAM) industry in Europe has grown rapidly in recent years, owing to Research and Development (R&D) investments from organisations, academia, governments and the European Commission. The goal of these R&D activities is to provide cities with safe and efficient solutions, resulting in reduced carbon footprint. Using very-low altitude zero emission passenger or cargo-carrying drones enables cities to improve the quality of life of their citizens.

ANRA will work FlyOhio, a collaboration of public, private and academic institutions led by DriveOhio’s advanced air mobility (AAM) group, to address the safety issues and other barriers to integrating passenger drones and other advanced air mobility vehicles into transportation systems.

NASA Advanced Air Mobility Project: ANRA to Provide UAM - DRONELIFE ANRA Technologies will act as the primary providers of UAM services for NASA's advanced air mobility project, a collaboration with FlyOhio.

👉 The European Commission today adopted the U-space package - three regulations that together create the conditions necessary for both drones and manned aircraft to operate safely in section of our airspace known as the U-space.

These regulations introduce new services for drone operators, allowing them to carry out more complex and longer-distance operations, particularly in congested, low-level airspace (below 120m), and when out of sight. The U-space creates and harmonises the conditions needed for manned and unmanned aircraft to operate safely, to prevent collisions between drones and other aircraft, and to mitigate the risks of drone traffic on the ground.
