Checking on the meat chicks! Hoping to move them outside sometime this week. They're outgrowing the brooder, but its been a cold spring. Usually, the chickens are on the field by now, but the slow start to spring has kept them indoors. Things are finally starting to warm up so they'll be upgrading soon 🙌

Swipe to see before and after 🙈

Did some much needed cleaning today.
When we moved into our house, there were 3 really old outbuildings. They were all left full of "stuff" - not ours🫠. I got to work on the chicken coop and the building I was going to use as a brooder pretty quickly. And then life happened and I somehow spent the majority of my time being a mom, cleaning our house and cooking meals, doing animal chores, working my "real job" and not making much of an effort to clean the other buildings. We didn't use them or have a need for it, so it just hadn't been a priority, but boy was it an eye sore when you looked inside 😵‍💫 well today, I finally got to it and did some much needed cleaning. Needless to say, the dumpster is full and a decent amount of black snot has come out of my nose. The floors still need to be swept a few more times, but I feel good about today's project. It really wasn't terrible and made me realize I should just do the dang thing instead of making it a monster it really isn't 😂 anyways, I'm planning on taking the shelves/cupboards out and refitting it to be a coop for my breeding hens. Now that I'm hatching 4 different breeds of chicks, I have to separate my hens and roosters by breed, which has been interesting to say the least 🙃 here's to making and using functional spaces, even if they're not the most aesthetically pleasing. Happy and healthy animals are my priority ❤️

As a note: I have no clue what is under the green tarp. It was there when we moved here. It's some sort of giant metal machinery that is going to take a lot more than just me to move.

Today's collection 😍 before I had chickens, I didn't know there were so many egg color possibilities. My currenr favorite are the moss Eggers (bottom left 6). What's your favorite color? .

Mossy 2.0

This is a from my hatch last spring of moss Eggers. I ended up with 2 hens and 4 roosters 😂 she's responsible for laying these beautiful moss colored eggs and I can't wait to hatch some more chicks. Hoping for a few more hens this year 🤞 My Moss egger rooster is going to be 3 this spring and he is the best rooster I've had. He's attacked a hawk to protect a hen and he's never even come close to giving me "the look" (you know the sideways one where they c**k their head right before they charge). Moss Eggers are also dual purpose breeds and another breed I plan to keep around a long time. Not knly do they lay stunning eggs, but they are calm, friendly, and a hardy bird - tolerating our extreme summers/winters very well. I initially purchased 4 chicks (2 hens and 2 rooster-they come unsexed) from in CA. I love their farm practices and have always received wonderful birds from them. Looking forward to adding more Moss Eggers to the farm 🐥🐣

Cleaned the coop. Prepped the brooder. Gathered the eggs. Enjoyed the sunshine. Gearing up for chick season

This is the first full year I've had Brahmas. They're a multi purpose breed chicken (egg layer and meat bird) and really quite stunning. They've been very docile and I definitely think they're going to be a staple breed in our flock. .

2022 turkey season wrapped up on Tuesday. We picked up our turkeys today. It's always a bittersweet time. Very rewarding to be able to feed our family a d others with animals we raised an cared for. But it's also a life. We do our very best to create a wonderful life for these animals, where they are free to roam and eat at their leisure. We are very grateful for their provision.

Peep how excited Clara was 😆

Your actions mean more than the words you say. Your kids will imitate what you do and how you treat others. Be a good example. Be kind. Be giving. Be grateful.

Quite the mystery.

I was hoping for a better picture, but this guy kept walking away from me.

This handsome rooster and a hen ended up in my shipped order from this spring 😂 I didn't realize they were out of place until their adult feathers came in. I double checked my order and I definitely didn't order any Barred Rock chicks or anything that would resemble this breed. Brahmas, Jersey Giants and Black Copper Marans are all that I have listed. So I'm not sure how they snuck in, but I'm not mad about it. I've never really been drawn to them because their eggs are pretty plain and their look had never really stood out to me. But now that I have 2, I am starting to really admire their feather pattern and appreciate their gentle personality.
My guess is that they were added to my order as "bonus" chicks and i just didnt realize it.
Whatever the answer may be, any rooster that's mellow is appreciated and welcome here. Given we have the enough hens/space for our roosters 😅

Have you ended up with mystery breeds before?

The girls on the farm needed a permanent spot on the feed 😇

Everybody trying to stay cool on this toasty Wednesday. Living in the desert, we deal with extreme temperatures. It's supposed to be in the 100s° all week and get up to 105°F. We spend.much of the winter in the single digits, sometimes going below zero for a few days. I wanted to make sure our chickens would be able to handle such extreme weather. The breeds we currently have are supposed to do well in both climates. These are breeds I plan on keeping around as they are good egg layers, dual purpose and cold/heat hardy. Currently in our line up we have Moss Eggers, Brahmas (white and brown) , Jersey Giants, Buff Orpingtons, and a few americaunas. I also ended up with 2 chickens I believe are Barred Rock (I honestly don't know how they got shipped to me, they weren't in my order 😂).
They have full access to their coop and run, but I let them free range and they seem to enjoy the shade under the fruit trees. They have access to plenty of cool water and I try and give them cool treats like Watermelon or strawberries. So far, they've done well in this heat and I'm hoping they continue to hold up well.
