WSU Ext Island County SNAP-Ed
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a hands-on, culturally sensitive nutrition education program funded by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). Our goal is to help individuals and families with limited resources develop skills and behaviors to eat healthfully and to live active lifestyles. We also work to influence the policies, systems, and environments that promote increased access to healthy foods and physical activity
The WSU Extension Island County SNAP-Ed program provides garden based education that is engaging, and extends to the classroom , cafeteria, and beyond. We are currently working with two elementary schools in the Oak Harbor School District to encourage healthy lifestyles for students and their guardians.
Strong community partnerships allow us to deliver nutrition education in non-school settings as well. We support two community gardens on the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and provide healthy recipe demonstrations using produce from the on-base gardens to encourage healthy eating and physical activity.
Our partners include Island County Health Department, Oak Harbor School District, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WSU Extension Island County Master Gardeners, Island County Waste Wise Program, the Island County Master Gardener Foundation and the North Whidbey Help House. These partnerships work to support our community and to increase access to healthy foods even when food dollars are tight.
