The Daily Heller
Daily news about design and popular culture.
If you ever listened to any of Marshall Arisman’s stories at the end of a thought he'd say: “Does that make sense.” This verbal tic in an otherwise warm yet authoritative speaking style was not really a question but an assertion. Of course, his stories (even the most nonsensical) made sense and now a new exhibition at the SVA Gramercy Gallery (229 E. 23rd St.) opens tonight featuring a number of Arisman’s lesser-seen visual stories. https://www.printmag.com/daily-heller/the-daily-heller-arisman-is-back-and-forth-and-always-with-us/

Once upon a time in the land of newspapers there was something called make-up men (and a few women, very few). They were overseen by production men, who, along with art directors made sure that paste-ups were were completed to exacting specifications (or not) from "flimsies" or tissue layouts. This followed the age of hot metal, where the same cast of characters (although later came art directors) the same process took place. Neither production nor art were allowed to "touch the type", neither metal or phototype.d
