Let’s get to know deeper about Studio Ghibli movies.
The Grave of the fireflies is the darkest movie of the Studio Ghibli movies.
People are used to watching Hollywood movies or Disney movies which are created very carefully for you to can enjoy wherever your nationality is.
Although the Studio Ghibli movies are enjoyable, it's just because of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata’s incredible talent and passion as an entertainer.
However, even still the movies are enjoyable, the movies are not made for a universal audience yet.
As directors themselves admitted that they're not intentionally making a movie for overseas.
When you watch their movie, the audience needs to set their perspective as a traveler in Japan such as the mindset needing to adopt the culture.
“Your common sense is not common in other countries.”

A new website is launched!
Thank you so much for supporting Jomon Anime. Our website has been updated to help people discover our work more easily and understand our perspective. Furthermore, Jomon Anime has relocated its base to the United States since September due to the fantastic opportunities we had. Although it will take a little bit more time to activate our work environments fully, we are still working on our comic, and filming like a duck!
Also, you will find a suspicious icon like a spyglass on our top page called "Our Lens". That is the biggest update that people can notice! We created a new page that you can access the articles Jomon Anime writes.
Our Lens is inspired by the Great Library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt. The library was a core of knowledge and history for ancient Egypt. Despite the fact that the scale is different, we want to share the things that attract us and the photographs the director has been taking and collecting., also such as untranslated interviews, Japanese culture that no one explains, history, foods, health, and anything else that catches director, Shohei's attention...
We don't write articles that are copied and pasted from another blog or news source, if we want to introduce another article, we will create an article that you can easily jump to the original page.
And the first article on Our Lens will be about a Studio Ghibli film, Grave of the Fireflies (1988), directed by Isao Takahata. The article reveals his rare interviews, which are not often translated. In the article, you can find out "how to watch it from a Japanese cultural perspective." The article will provide 8 slides to make it easier to understand, please stay tuned!

Maybe people think it’s ridiculous to make an animation with hand drawn, but if analog films are back in the movie industry, the hand drawn might too.
I would love to create 3D animation in the future depending on a story, but the problem with 3D CGI is its realism. That realism kill creator/people’s imagination because they rely on the effects they can click. If there’s no large budgets from giant sponsors, you even can’t develop a new tool and effect. If that is the case need a best friend and best engineer who’s passionate with starting from a basement who can handle the heat from a computer.
This is like a painter is waiting for someone to write a new page of a technique book.

Also, I even don’t know if audiences need drama anymore. How could people believe in enjoying the movie when people are sweating to find “a real”, “a real friend”,”a real honor”, “a real food lol”.
People are looking for a real with “watching” a stress/shock/anxiety from a virtual media. I see this is reflection of the popular show.
What kind of love are you looking for? what’s the point of showing kids/people the virtual media?

Recently, a person I know got a baby, he’s a boy. one day, after playing with a toy with him, I took him in stroller to walk around the neighborhood. And I showed him a pine tree, then he stopped everything what he’s doing and just stared. This made me realize that he was observing it and being impressed, not just getting an instant excitement from toys that blinging. The more I see him, the more makes me think he doesn’t need to watch a virtual content, he needs a real tree or soil or sun, waves, grasses…

This sounds very pessimistic, but I just don’t want to create anything that helps people to be isolated from the reality. Or maybe I'm in Japan too long…

I’m not making this movie because I like to draw, I don’t like to draw anymore, I just feel like I need to make this piece. If the time needed my movie, then good. Just once is enough, but if I’m lucky, let me make until people think I’m useless. I don’t beg, and I have faith in myself.
