PICTOU – Local Couple Plan Event to Increase Community Connections

It is often said that a sense of belonging to a greater community improves your motivation, health, happiness, and overall well being. These are a few of the reasons why locals, Jill and Blaine MacDonald in partnership with the Town of Pictou, wanted to plan a Community Event. I wanted to know more about the organizers of the “Meet & Greet '' and what motivated them to organize this Event, so I recently had a delightful conversation with Jill.

“So, how long have you been living in Pictou?” I asked. “We moved to Pictou 11 years ago in the summer of 2010. We were living in Bromont, Quebec before that,” she recalled fondly. Curiously I asked, “Why did you choose Pictou?” She laughed, “We actually chose Pictou three years before we retired and moved here. We were on our way to Sydney to catch the NFLD Ferry and decided to stop in Pictou on our way by. That decision changed our lives.”

I noticed on the Event poster the term PBC “Pictou By Choice” and wanted to know the story behind the phrase so I asked. Jill smiled, “Rather than being called a CFA (come from away), which we had never heard of before, we changed those letters to PBC (Pictou By Choice), which we thought sounded more inclusive. We thought it would be nice to meet other people who had chosen to live in Pictou like us, or town folk who chose to stay here because they loved the town as well,” she continued, “Blaine and I got involved in numerous volunteer organizations in town where we met great new friends that are now like extended family. Volunteering can be an important avenue in which to become part of the community.”

I will leave you with this quote by Robert Alan Silvertein that sums it up best, “In our hectic, fast-paced, consumer-driven society, it's common to feel overwhelmed, isolated and alone. Many are re-discovering the healing and empowering role that community can bring to our lives. The sense of belonging we feel when we make the time to take an active role in our communities can give us a deeper sense of meaning and purpose.”
