Letter writing has been around for centuries and it still maintains its value in the arena of written communication. This type of communication has no boundaries, I believe this is why it is still an important aspect in the way we communicate, even in our present age.

The Death of the New Year’s Resolution

What separates a new year from the old, is it 365 days or is it a second?

Whenever you hear the word new, a natural excitement and vibrance is stemmed, you look forward to holding that new product, new baby, or beginning that new goal. When it comes to a new year you have that motivation, you focus on the brand-new days in a brand-new year and a brand new you that you will endeavor to become.

It brings a different type of motivation that you would not find in the same year; individuals look forward to overcoming and leaving behind pains of the present year; and before the new year reaches, we have a lot of plans set out for it. After all it contains 365 days, its more than enough days for us to fulfil numerous goals, objectives and our lives can change for the better.

When we decide on a resolution, we usually only decide on the goals that we would like to achieve, getting that new figure, finding your dream job, or maybe finding the love of your life. However, just settling on having a resolution is not enough. When deciding on a new year’s resolution, you must plan how your resolution will be achieved.

A resolution entails deciding firmly on a course of action; you must have a plan, breaking things down into simpler forms and holding firmly to your route. Resolutions are not achieved by deciding what your goal is, it is deciding that you will fulfil the necessary requirements needed to be successful in achieving your goals.

You cannot receive that new product that you have always dreamed of by putting it on a list and having no plan of action to attain it. What about that lovely new baby, you must go through that period for the baby to have the ability to grow to its potential. So, why would the new year’s resolution be different. Just as quickly and excited we are to jump at putting our goals on the list, we should be quite excited to map out the path that we need to take to reach our intended destination.

Just as a year consists of so many days in a year, it does take a second for the old year to become new, but the year must be fulfilled by passing time. Time which is a gift for everyone whether it be a year or a second, we must decide how to spend that time. And when we realize that the new year is reached within a second, we do not only cherish that one second that transitions from old to new, but the journey that it takes to reach that moment in time.

When we fail to plan, we fail to succeed. I have a personal mantra that is significant to achieving goals which is called, the 5 P’s: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. We cannot expect to be successful if we do not plan and we do not spend the time in playing out the plan. We set up ourselves by being excited of a goal we want to achieve without planning how we intend to achieve it.

We put a noose around the necks of our new year’s resolution and our hopes and dreams when we fail to put the steps in place to put our feet in the path that we have laid ahead of time. So let your new year’s resolution be a successful one and not just a goal that will never be achieved.

Ask Koren is a unique book filled with marriage, relationships, work and general advice from different questions asked by a variety of individuals and answered by Ms. Norton. There is also a section that gives open advice, which I absolutely love. It was a great privilege to be a part of the development of this publication.

This is a personal motto that I use as an inspiration and motivation on my journey in life. It is simple and honest and if we take the directions given as a road map to the route for a successful future, we can meet each other there; it's big enough to accommodate us all.
