Few weeks back we had a practical on microscopy where we identified the different types of microscopes used in research. We were also given the chance to explore how they operate and we did this using the 10+ years old microscopic slides.
Microscope is nearly a universal symbol of science, representing our ability to explore the world below the limits of our perception. They come in many different forms for example a simple microscope, confocal microscope, transmission and scanning electron microscopes.
If it wasn’t for these amazing instruments, we would have never found out bacteria existed!
FUN FACT: The earliest microscopes were known as ‘flea glasses’ because they were used to study small insects.
An OSCE is a type of examination designed to test clinical skill performance and competence in a range of skills. As part of this clinical degree, students had a chance to practice on each other on how to measure blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation. They were also able to perform an ECG on dummy patients. Results were recorded in an early warning scoring and pain chart (EWS). They also learned how to analyse urine (urinalysis) and test for any substances present.
The on-site team has been split into three groups – sample collectors, sample processors and result recorders. They are all working together to ensure that the centre is running smoothly and effectively. We appreciate all your hard work!
