Skincare Myth : 

A High SPF Protects You From The Sun

Vitamin D is best absorbed by our bodies when taken as supplements rather than from unprotected sun exposure as this has dangerous consequences. There is a lot of MISLEADING information about sunscreen, specifically what SPF means and how much of it we need.

At DERMAGLOW, we believe in educating our clients about sun damage and the effects this has on their skin both short and long term.

Sun damage is caused by UV radiation- BOTH by UVA and UVB rays.

Many creams and sprays will market that they offer sun protection and will highlight their SPF levels. However, most people don’t realise that SPF only measures protection against UVB rays, and doesn’t measure protection against UVA rays!

UVA rays don’t cause sunburn. It is the UVB rays that do this. so by preventing sunburn, some products with a high SPF can lead you to believe you’ve been protected from the sun, meanwhile, UVA damage is still occurring without leaving any skin-reddening signs.  UVA rays are extremely damaging because they are a longer wavelength and pe*****te more deeply into the skin. In fact, UVA rays are more responsible for photoaging and are also the main cause for developing skin cancers.

To prevent against both UVA and UVB rays, you should buy sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 ( we suggest an SPF of 50. It’s worth noting that anything claiming an SPF of above 50 is not actually offering any incremental sun protection!
AND make sure it also contains UVA-protecting ingredients like ZINC OXIDE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, OXYBENZONE, AVOBEMZONE.

Products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays are referred to as BROAD SPECTRUM or MULTI SPECTRUM. These products will specifically indicate UVA/UVB protection so make sure you keep an eye out for these gems!

MYTH: “You Should Only Have Antiwrinkle injections When You Already Have Wrinkles”

FACT: No no no! We all know that PREVENTION is better than cure. Botox can be used effectively as a preventative measure to stop wrinkles from setting in in the first place! By injecting this drug into the muscles that often lead to wrinkles, you will stop them from over contracting and keep them smooth, limiting the movement and therefore preventing wrinkles from forming. Starting a little younger and being proactive in your approach can mean that this treatment is needed less often when you are older, and it’ll be easier to maintain your youthful looks!

MYTH: “Botox and Filler Treatments are Just for Women”

FACT: Although Botox treatments are more commonly requested by females, these treatments are also popular with many men too. This misconception may be simply be that women talk more openly about having these treatments whereas men perhaps may be a little more private mainly because of this very myth!

MYTH: “Botox makes you lose all facial expressions”

FACT: “Botox only relaxes muscles at the point of injection, which means that it cannot completely inhibit facial expressions. Provided that it is administered by a skilled physician who knows exactly where to inject, patients will still maintain an entire range of facial expressions, only with fewer lines giving you a natural look!”

MYTH: “Botox only works for facial wrinkles”

FACT: Botox has a vast range of uses aside from smoothing out lines and wrinkles. It can relieve migraines, neck and back pain, facial twitches, jaw joint pain, excessive sweating and even depression! Check if your practice has had ADVANCED TRAINING.

MYTH: “Anti wrinkle injections and fillers are very painful”

FACT: There will always be some amount of discomfort when having any type of injection, but it is by no means unbearable. Many compare the sensation of Anti wrinkle injections to a pin prick. Fillers can be a little more uncomfortable, but the majority contain the numbing agent lidocaine (local anesthetic) to minimise discomfort, making the procedure comfortable. A trained and experienced practitioner will know to look for signs that shouldn’t be there! Again SAFETY should come first.

Is Botox is toxic and dangerous
Many people believe Botox to be a harmful form of Botulism and therefore dangerous. Whilst it is true that Botox is derived from a purified protein from the toxin, it is totally safe for its designed use. Infact Botox is used on the NHS for non cosmetic precodures. Botox has also been approved by the FDA and the FDA only ever approve cosmetic treatments that are thoroughly researched, trialed and proven to be safe.

What to think about before you have Anti wrinkle injections

If you're thinking about having anti wrinkle injections, be clear about why you want them.
Make sure the person doing your Botox injections is suitably qualified and experienced.
They should be a MEDICAL PRACTIONER and on a register to show they meet set standards in training, skills and have valid insurance in place.

AVOID practitioners who have had no training. Talk about the following with your chosen practitioner:
• their training, qualifications and experience
• the name of the product, if it’s licensed, and how and where it’s made
• any risks or possible side effects (they should go through a comprehensive consent form with you)
• what will happen if things go wrong
• what insurance cover they have

Botulinum toxin can only be prescribed in a face-to-face meeting by a qualified medical practitioner, such as a doctor, dentist, pharmacist prescriber or nurse prescriber.
The person prescribing botulinum toxin is responsible for making sure it's given safely!
