On the surface, it’s CALM ..just a couple of coaches and a player enjoying the game ..But, it’s what you cannot SEE or HEAR that really brings this moment to life.. it’s the critical thinking and the countless thoughts streaming through our heads.. it’s the strategy, adjustments, moves, counter-moves, anticipation, and planning..

PLAYER: Focusing on his next at-bat and developing a plan for the next time he steps in the box. Thinking about the pitches he saw in his previous at-bat and trying to figure out what the pitcher tendencies are and have been up and down the lineup.

COACH 1: Adjusting defense based on hitters swing path and tendencies. Analyzing and reading our own pitcher, trying to figure out how to attack the next 3 batters. Developing a plan of attack for the hitters. Thinking about all potential substitutions for later in the game, if needed. Watching the opposing coaches with intent of picking off any signals or signs that would give away their next move. Anticipating how to attack if we get up or down. Planning the next move.

COACH 2: Calling pitches and focusing on the opposing hitters and what each hitter has done in their past and present plate appearances. Determining whether to attack with off-speed first (Back-Count) or go right after them. Reading and analyzing our pitcher, trying to determine where his confidence level is at on the day and what pitches he feels the most confident in. Focused on ONE pitch at a time and figuring out the best way to set up hitters.

A player with slow to average speed, who is ‘smart’ on the bases, will be more effective for their team than a faster player who relies on speed alone. Learn to be a ‘smart’ base runner!
