BECOME A FIRESMART™ CERTIFIED HOME ON HIADA GWAII!

The North Coast Regional District is proud to work with FireSmart™ to offer the Home Partners Program on rural Haida Gwaii. Residents of Electoral Areas D and E are eligible to receive free assessments of their homes/properties to identify the risks of wildfires and receive rebates on mitigation work they perform on their properties to make them more resilient to wildfire.

The FireSmart Home Partners Program (HPP) was designed to engage homeowners in voluntary wildfire mitigation activities by offering a professional home assessment with property-specific recommendations.

The assessment process accurately evaluates a home and property for wildfire exposure, while engaging the homeowner in their unique risk and ways to reduce it.

With this new program, FireSmart Canada has trained, professional Wildfire Mitigation Specialists (WMS) to complete the HPP assessments.

On Haida Gwaii, there is one specialist who can help you with that assessment – Robert Williamson, who is a local resident in Tlell, and a volunteer with the Tlell Volunteer Fire Department.

Once a home/ property is assessed, the goal of this program is to issue a certificate to the homeowner indicating that FireSmart requirements have been met.

After the homeowner completes all required actions in the report (such as limbing trees or screening vents), the Specialist verifies that the required actions are complete, after which FireSmart Canada issues a “Certificate of Mitigation” to the homeowner.

If you are interested in knowing more about the FireSmart Home Partners Program, read more here: https://firesmartbc.ca/homepartners/

Want more details on a FireSmart assessment for your home/ property and ultimately obtaining a “Certificate of Mitigation” for your property? Please Message us on Facebook or email your request to [email protected].

Are you threatened by wildfire? Do you have an hour?

Grass shorter than 10 centimetres is less likely to burn intensely. If possible, ensure your lawn is well hydrated, as dry grass has a higher flammability potential.

The Coastal Fire Centre will enact a campfire prohibition on August 4, 2022 at noon Pacific Daylight Time for all regions except Haida Gwaii.

This prohibition is being enacted to help reduce the risk of wildfires in our region. The prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands within the Coastal Fire Centre, unless specified in local government bylaws.

The campfire prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, provided they are CSA or ULC approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

Category 2 and 3 fires were prohibited as of July 15, 2022 – this includes backyard and industrial burning. All burning prohibitions will be in place until October 28, 2022, or until rescinded.

We appreciate the public supporting us by adhering to these prohibitions during this period of increased wildfire risk in our region.
