Meet Meran, a 34 year old carpentry apprentice from north east Melbourne, one of eight women recently awarded the $2,000 Sisters of Charity Foundation Apprentice Scholarship Prize in 2024.
Meran noted what a difference the scholarship funding will provide to her due to the challenges of living independently on an apprenticeship wage. "I've been focused on groceries, fuel, so there's not much left for anything else” stated Meran, and thanked the Sisters of Charity Foundation for their generous scholarship funding.
The Sisters of Charity Scholarship Project revealed the majority of women apprentices and trainees struggled with basic cost of living items such as food (18%) and petrol (16%) followed by buying or replacing tools (15%). Many struggle to make ends meet, undertake additional employment, or abandon their dreams of taking up a trade due to these issues.
If you want to see more future tradeswomen like Meran stay in their trade career, donate to the Community Foundation today - https://zurl.co/9ck5.
As we celebrate National Skills Week, we’re highlighting the inspiring journey of Sneha Patel, a dedicated NSW Early Childhood Education educator.
Sneha's career began in 2012 when she joined an early learning service as a Certificate III Trainee. Her passion for working with young children encouraged her to complete a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care.
“When you see how much joy it brings a child when they write their own name, tie their shoelaces, or learn the rules of a game, it makes you realise how important this stage of life is, and how important this role is.”
Now an early learning centre manager and an accelerated degree pathway student, Sneha is full of encouragement for anyone thinking about upskilling or reskilling.
“You will learn so much and grow so much. You’ll be given more responsibilities at work, increase your pay, discover new ideas for your practice.”
Sneha’s story is a great reminder of how undertaking a traineeship can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career.
