PORTRAIT OF A CITY - OK WATCH SHOP. Last week I photographed Craig Kawajiri at the OK Watch Shop as part of our series commissioned by the City of Millville. Craig made it clear that I would have to wait while he waited on customers before I could take his picture. It was over an hour before there was a break as Craig patiently dealt with customers, listened & shared stories with them & when possible, made minor repairs while they waited. He is fair & honest & a staple of Downtown Millville. Photo by Bill Horin/ArtC & Story by Sal Emma/ArtC

OK Watch Shop is the place for jewelry and watches on High Street. Owner Craig Kawajiri’s family started the business in 1957. Craig has been Millville’s go-to for both sales and service for three decades.
“The customers want somebody reliable. That’s me,” Craig says. Trust and reliability is key in the jewelry business and Craig has built a reputation for doing things right.
If it can tell time, Craig can probably fix it – and he won’t charge an arm and a leg. He also repairs jewelry – broken chains, clasps, ring sizing and the like. “I do a little bit of everything,” he says. He’s known for his fair prices, quick turnaround and enthusiasm for repairs. He also keeps a wide inventory of items for sale.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland County, Craig grew up in Bridgeton. He learned a lot on the job working for his family but he is also formally trained. He is a graduate of Bowman Technical
School, formerly located in Lancaster, Pa.

John Candy Rants About Hollywood in a Calgary Hotel Room 23/07/2021

If you dig crime stories, and the world behind those stories-whether history, geopolitics, espionage, humor, or craft-sign up for CrimeReads from Literary Hub. I can't believe what they put out, and how often I stumble on stories that make my day.

This piece on a night with John Candy, vodka and he**in, has tasting notes of Hunter S. Thompson. It's by Tommy Swerdlow and includes a nod to Philly's Michael Goldberg, RIP (PS. This is not an advert. I just like promoting s**t I like).

John Candy Rants About Hollywood in a Calgary Hotel Room We were up in Calgary doing final re-writes on our first movie and staying in a fancy hotel and just doing that screenwriters getting their first movie made/showbiz thing, which feels real nice whe…

Here is the mugshot of South African Dawie Groenewald, so-called "Butcher of Musina," who was arrested yesterday for rhino horn trafficking. I investigated Dawie and his Gang a few years ago for National Geographic and uncovered the very clever way he and his associates manipulate the South African legal system to avoid prosecution. I spent time with Dawie on his incredibly luxurious big game breeding farm (helicopters, planes, guest houses, millions in animals, etc.).
Dawie also recruited American trophy hunters to hunt rhino on his property, then sell the horns illegally to Vietnamese buyers for the Asian medicine market, whose visitors include those who incorrectly believe the horn can cure cancer. He is wanted by the US, which put out an extradition request for him.
Dawie is longtime pals with crime boss Hugo Ras, arrested recently on weapons and fraud charges, and formerly the go-to outfitter in South Africa/Zimbabwe for Donald Trump, Jr., Eric, and their friends. I spent a good deal of time with Ras Botha, too, including visits to him in Pretoria Central prison.
The character Ras Botha in IN THE COMPANY OF KILLERS would not exist without the time I spent with these two alleged kingpins. The prison scenes I describe in the book are similar to what I experienced first hand.

THE FUTURE LOOKS BLEAK FOR DAWIE GROENEWALD, AKA THE BUTCHER OF MUSINA
Simon Bloch reporting
July 22 2021
The future looks bleak for South Africa's notorious rhino horn syndicate alleged kingpin, Dawie Groenewald, 52, and Mpumalanga hunting safari company owner and businessman, AB Steyn, 47, who appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court this afternoon, following their arrest yesterday.
The duo faced charges under :Section 57 (1) of act 10 of 2004, for the Illegal possession and selling of rhino horns, after they were nabbed in possession of 19 rhino horns during an integrated operation consisting of DPCI,EPR Wildlife Trafficking Head office, Counter intelligence and the private sector.
Two Toyota Hilux vehicles also seized.
Groenewald, also known as the Butcher of Musina, has been out on bail since his arrest in 2010, when 26 rhino carcasses were dug up on his farm Prachtig.
The state's case against Groenewald and nine others, including veterinarians, a pilot and professional hunters, has repeatedly been postponed through tricky legal maneuvering by his defense team.
However, the future looks bleak for Groenewald after his latest arrest, and the police look set to oppose bail when the bail application date is set..
The case was still before the court at the time of this publication.
LATEST UPDATE: The case has been adjourned and will continue tomorrow for bail application.

The Mid-Shore’s Bryan Christy in the Company of Killers His bio reads like a spy novel. It’s a Mystery to Me | The Center for Fiction Despite some much-needed spring weather to raise spirits the news cycle continues to be overwhelming.
