The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association (ISA) is extremely disappointed in the passage and enactment of HB 5471, that further regulates and limits the purchase of a variety of weapons for lawful gun owners.
The ISA has opposed this legislation throughout its development and remains opposed to the bill as passed by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor. We, as a representative of chief law enforcement officials throughout Illinois, are very concerned and disturbed by the ongoing and escalating violence throughout our State and Country.
We are always supportive of new tools, techniques and laws that assist us in preventing and holding accountable those that wage efforts of harm and violence on others.
However, this new law does not do that. We will continue to advocate on behalf Sheriffs and the law-abiding citizens throughout Illinois. Link to the full bill: https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/102/HB/10200HB5471lv.htm
The following is a statement issued by Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle regarding HB5471.
"As your Sheriff, I wanted to give the residents of Ogle County an update on the recent passage of HB 5471, also known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act. As your duly elected Sheriff, myself and my staff are sworn to protect the citizens of Ogle County. This oath and responsibility is taken with the utmost seriousness.
When I was sworn into office, I accepted the duty to protect the rights provided to all of us in the Constitution. One of those enumerated rights is the right of the people to keep and bear arms provided under the 2nd amendment. The right to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty and property is regarded as an inalienable right by the people.
I, among many others, believe that HB 5471 is a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution. Therefore, as the custodian of the jail and chief law enforcement official for Ogle County, proclaim that neither myself or my office will be checking to ensure that lawful gun owners register their weapons with the State, nor will we be arresting or housing individuals that have been charged solely with non-compliance of this Act."

As your Sheriff, I wanted to give citizens of Kankakee County an update on the recent passage of HB 5471, also known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act.
As your duly elected Sheriff my job and my office are sworn, in fact, to protect the citizens of Kankakee County. This is a job and responsibility that I take with the utmost seriousness.
Part of my duties that I accepted upon being sworn into office was to protect the rights provided to all of us, in the Constitution. One of those enumerated rights is the right of the people to keep and bear arms provided under the 2nd amendment.

Therefore, as the custodian of the jail and chief law enforcement official for Kankakee County, that neither myself nor my office will be checking to ensure that lawful gun owners register their weapons with the State, nor will we be arresting or housing law abiding individuals that have been charged solely with non-compliance of this Act.

You've heard of criminal justice reform, but what exact impact will the new laws have on the State of Illinois? Starting next year, after being charged with the crimes listed below, criminals eligible for probation upon conviction would be able to be released pending a court date. The law would also allow judges to keep suspects that they consider dangerous in custody without bail.
WFCN News will have an in-depth look, along with interviews with local law enforcement raising concerns about the new law, later this week.

Message from the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge
Board of Trustees
Three Chicago Police Department officers have been lost in the past several weeks because of the seemingly unbearable strain of the profession. No words are adequate to ease the grief and pain that these officers' families and colleagues are experiencing. What we can do is assure the survivors that you are not alone. Each and every member of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge is a shoulder to cry on, a set of ears to listen, and a warm embrace when you need it most. Lean on us because we are here for you.
To our brothers and sisters who are still out there every day protecting and serving, you are not alone either. We've all experienced the pressures, strains, and doubts that you have. Don't think you are tough enough to handle it by yourself. Talk to someone. Call Officers Supporting Officers any time, day, or night, at 866-535-1078. Have your department work with the IPPFA's Saving Blue Lives program, http://www.ippfa.org.
Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go to the families who have lost loved ones to the law enforcement profession. Let us all pledge to honor those losses by not adding to their number.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Chris Southwood

This senseless war on police has to stop. We encourage people to research who you are voting for and get out and vote. Our law enforcement officers greatly appreciate the support and love that is given to use in this part of the state, but the reality is if the political climate doesn't change it's only going to get worse.
I would also ask that everyone keep the families of all law enforcement professionals in your prayers. In a time when record numbers are leaving the profession the support of the communities we serve keeps us going.
