"Episode 2: Should I take white sugar or brown sugar?"
Every time I see a patient with diabetes my usual question to them is what do you eat in a day. A very nosy doctor indeed. However, getting the patient to be truthful with us is really important.
I recall meeting a patient in my clinic and I had detailed her food diary.
Breakfast: 2 slice of white bread with butter and jam, coffee with brown sugar
Lunch: Rice with fish, vegetable and soup, water
Tea time: Coffee with brown sugar
Dinner: Mee or bihun soup
This patient of mine was very passionate about taking brown sugar, telling me that close friends have been telling the benefits of brown sugar to white sugar. And there she went...
Then I saw her sugar control. She wasn't happy when I told her that her sugar wasn't really improving.
So what is the DIFFERENCE between white and brown sugar? Is there a difference in diabetes?
Brown or white sugar comes from the same source and usually sugarcane. Hence it is quite the SAME.
Brown sugar is a mixture of white sugar and molasses giving it the darker colour. Although there are some added vitamins and minerals in brown sugar, it is almost negligible. Many a times, people get mistaken that brown sugar taste less sweeter than white sugar, so it should be better for them! It is wrong and essentially almost the same sugar content!
In fact since it may feel less sweet, some may tend to take more brown sugar in coffee or tea!
Both white or brown sugar are simply SUGAR, once consumed it causes spike in our blood sugar level.
Therefore it is IMPORTANT to REDUCE or ELIMINATE SUGAR from our daily intake to get our blood sugar better controlled.
Look into our daily SUGAR intake be it WHITE or BROWN SUGAR!
"Episode 1: WAKING UP TO DIABETES"
1 in every 5 MALAYSIANS HAVE DIABETES
1 in every 2 WITH DIABETES DO NOT KNOW they have diabetes as DIABETICS MAY HAVE NO symptoms at all.
At the point of the diagnosis of diabetes, you may already be having problems with your eyesight, kidney and even nerves.
So diabetes diagnosis is really a wake up call!
So get yourself screened thoroughly.
Often we can be scared with the diagnosis but it is a time to reflect on what to do about it!
Let's get it right the FIRST TIME!!!
- Don't live in DENIAL
- EMBRACE the diagnosis
- Get to know your HbA1c level as the specific level will help us PLAN your treatment
- Small STEPS can lead to BIG changes in your sugar control
In my experience of treating patients with newly diagnosed diabetes, COMMITTED patients can have their DIABETES CONTROLLED WELL and SOME EVEN CONTROL DIABETES WITHOUT MEDICATIONS.
Remember when you have diabetes, DON'T BE IN DESPAIR.
