Hello everyone, my name is Airis, and I am deeply honored to speak with you today at the Homicide Memorial. I want to thank Victims for Justice for organizing this event and for inviting me to share my story and reflections with all of you.
Today, we gather to remember and honor the lives that were tragically taken from us. Each name we speak and each memory we share is a testament to their enduring impact on our lives. As we stand here in Hostetler Park, we are reminded of the importance of community, support, and the collective strength we find in one another.
The loss of a loved one to violence is an unimaginable pain that leaves a permanent mark on our hearts. I am here today to remember Samantha Koenig, whose life was tragically cut short. Samantha was a bright, spirited young woman who brought joy to those around her. She had a warm heart, a kind soul, and a smile that could light up any room. Her life was filled with dreams, aspirations, and a deep love for her family and friends.
Tragically, Samantha's life was taken in an act of senseless violence while she was working at a coffee stand in Anchorage. The safety measures that could have protected her were not in place, and her death highlighted the urgent need for better workplace safety regulations. Although I did not know Samantha personally, I have had the privilege of knowing her sister, Kaylee, my entire life. Kaylee and I grew up together, and she has been a lifelong friend. Working closely with her on 'Samantha's Shield' has been a deeply personal and transformative experience.
'Samantha's Shield' is a program aimed at promoting workplace safety in Alaska. Through this initiative, we hope to turn our grief into a force for positive change. 'Samantha's Shield' advocates for additional employee presence during night shifts, adequate lighting, proper snow maintenance, and outdoor cameras – all measures that could have saved Samantha's life. By implementing these safety measures, we aim to prevent future tragedies and protect others from experiencing the same heartbreak.
This journey has been a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that can arise from tragedy. Samantha's memory fuels our determination to make a difference, to create a safer environment for everyone. We carry her spirit with us in every step we take towards making our community a safer place.
As we remember our loved ones today, let us also commit to being vigilant and proactive in our efforts to ensure safety and justice in our communities. It is through our collective action that we can honor their memories and bring about meaningful change. Each one of us has a role to play, whether it is supporting legislation, participating in community watch programs, or simply being there for one another.
To the families here today, I want to acknowledge your incredible strength and resilience. Your courage in the face of such profound loss is truly inspiring. We gather here not only to remember those we've lost but to support one another, to share our stories, and to remind ourselves that we are not alone. Our shared grief binds us together, and in that unity, we find the strength to move forward.
In memory of Samantha, I urge you all to check out the Signatures for Samantha page. It is a platform where we can continue our advocacy for workplace safety and ensure that Samantha's story brings about positive change. I also call upon business owners to join us and share their support in the Samantha's Shield program. Your involvement can make a significant difference in creating safer workplaces and preventing future tragedies.

By working together, we can create a safer, more compassionate world, one where the legacies of those we have lost continue to inspire and guide us.

We've made some important changes to the Samantha Koenig Safety Act. Now, we're focusing on making Sam's Shield!! Sam's shield is a volunteer program for business owners! This means that businesses can choose to adopt the safety measures that could have made a difference in Samantha's life and enhance security for their employees.
