Now here is our intern Oliver!

He has for the last seven months followed Nuna while completing his masters in psychology.

As a psychologist, Oliver aspires to help people through E-health initiatives. He believes digital platforms like Nuna are the most effective way to make psychological interventions more accessible to people. 📱

“It’s inspiring to see such an assorted group of people work in sync with each other. Pioneering the way Nuna does requires a lot of creativity, but also a strong and diverse team. Everybody is able to share their ideas - even the inexperienced intern”

Have you ever wondered who’s behind the psychology of Nuna? 🤓

Emilie is our lead psychologist who loves digital mental health!

She applies the techniques and methods of evidence-based psychotherapy to the development of the app. Together with a team of talented psychology students, she creates everything from the chatbot of Nuna to the therapeutic tools 🔧

Emilie wants to help people around the world and prevent the development of mental health disorders:

"There is a gap when it comes to adequate mental health services. Globally, over 70 % of people in need of professional help will not get it. Some of the most commonly known barriers to getting help are stigma, lack of time, high cost, wanting to work on things for oneself and low availability of therapists.

One of the biggest reasons why I love to work at Nuna is that I get to be part of bridging that gap. By proving step-by-step evidence-based techniques, psychoeducation and normalization in the app, we can help people relieve and prevent the development of anxiety, stress and depression." ❤️️

It’s well known that it’s often possible to detect how someone’s feeling from their body posture 👉. Just imagine Ross from Friends walking into Central Perk with slumped shoulders, dragging his feet with his head down, about to utter his famous “hi…” 😪. And this relationship has been shown to run both ways, as our body posture isn’t just the outcome of our mood, but also affects how we feel. This is an example of embodied cognition, a term concerning the close connection between the mind and the body 🧠🧍. Studies show that just the physical act of keeping your posture straight can boost your motivation and increase your energy - when we stand up straight and tall, our cortisol levels are reduced, and our testosterone increases 🙌! This way, oozing confidence might just make you feel confident.

The brain is far from static. In fact, when we go about our lives and experience the environment, our brains change and adapt as a result. This malleability of the brain is referred to as neuroplasticity 🤯. While our brains are especially sensitive to change during childhood, neuroplasticity continues to play a big part throughout life.

This is because of the fact that - among other things - neuroplasticity is linked to our learning ability 🔍. When we start to ride a bike or train our cooking skills, new connections are formed between neurons in the brain - and the more we repeat the training, the stronger the connections get 💪. This is what Hebb refers to in his quote “neurons that fire together, wire together”.

Hangry - The growing irritation that comes with a rumbling stomach 🍽️😤

Turns out there is some truth to the infamous slogan: "You are not yourself when you are hungry" 😅🍫

Being hungry can make most people a bit grumpy 😑

This is because lack of food means a decreased level of glucose in our blood. Low levels of glucose will eventually force the body to release cortisol (a stress hormone) and adrenaline (the fight-or-flight hormone) into the bloodstream to stabilize our blood sugar 💪 Low levels of glucose can also affect brain functions that allow us to control impulses and regulate our primitive urges 🤪🍔

What is the best meal to give someone who is feeling hangry? 🤔

We’re celebrating the new cool animations in our app 🙌

Our design team is currently creating a bunch of animations to guide users on their journey 🌍

We want to make mental health initiatives approachable and engaging. The animations do just that by breaking down techniques and by bringing humor to the app 🤗

Check out our animations in the tool “Calming Music” that will help you fall asleep. And stay tuned for more new stuff as we continue to release animations! 🌸

Let’s talk about procrastination - a topic most of us are WAY too familiar with 😅

Whether you are a student preparing for an exam or a busy project leader working to reach a deadline. Chances are you have procrationated at some point😇

One of the most recognized theories on this topic is called Temporal Motivation Theory - A theory that models the motivating power of approaching deadlines📅

This theory states that an increase in Expectancy and Value results in a greater motivation. Whereas an increase in Delay and Impulsiveness will result in a decrease in motivation.

If the reward of working on a task (I.e. studying for an exam) is delayed, the task will likely be put on hold to make room for activities like playing video games or hanging out with friends that offers immidiate gratification. However, as the exam approaches the motivation to study will surpass the motivation to play games or socialize🎮📝

We’re excited to announce that the feeling Guilty has been added to the app! 🙌 🌼

It can be a heavy burden to experience guilt or shame. Essentially, both feelings are meant to promote socially acceptable behavior which will benefit our society. Still, sometimes our conscience may become a bit too critical of us in the process... And then it can be hard to figure out what to do, especially without a bit of guidance 🤷

That’s why it’s now possible to find 4 (soon 5) new tools in the app that can help ease feelings of shame and guilt 😌 Head into the app to learn more 🦙

Let’s talk about loneliness 🙂

Loneliness is a distressing feeling that one’s social relationships are insufficient. Many studies have attempted to figure out what causes loneliness and what we can do to feel less lonely. Especially, in recent years where Covid 19 restrictions have put a damper on important social activities.

Some researchers have described loneliness as being a one-dimensional global phenomenon, while others have pointed out that the feeling is multi-faceted. Researchers who support the multidimensional view have suggested that loneliness can be divided into two categories; social and emotional loneliness.

Social loneliness refers to dissatisfaction with ones social network of friends and acquaintances.

Emotional loneliness refers to dissatisfaction with more intimate relationships and attachments.

A newer tripartite theory has improved upon this model and proposed that loneliness should be assessed through three dimensions: social, emotional, and intimatepersonal/romantic loneliness.

In this model emotional loneliness have been divided into family and romantic loneliness. This is to say that individuals can feel lonely in one domain (intimatepersonal/romantic) and simultaneously be satisfied in another domain (family).

Knowing about these three types of loneliness can make it easier to understand what makes us feel lonely and explain how experincing loneliness in one domain like social loneliness, does not mean you are dissatisfied with the connection you have to your partner or your family.

Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in our thoughts and over-identify with them.

E.g. if I think "I'm a failure" then it means I must be one... 😩

But, what if I told you that thoughts are simply just thoughts?

Just like clouds in the sky thoughts will pop up in our awareness and leave again on their own ☁️

Next time you notice an unhelpful thought, then try to put it on a cloud and let it float by at its own pace 🤗
