The disturbing satellite images of the mountain of fast fashion clothing in Chile's Atacama desert have been making the rounds on LinkedIn and some global media outlets. Still, only those within and interested in the fashion industry, or those with a keen eye on sustainability, have seen and shared them.
So why is the 'desert of clothes' not making it to global mainstream media? It seems purposefully contained to an industry issue, leaving out the most critical stakeholders - the people (consumers) fueling fast fashion thanks to the business-as-usual operations and marketing models we have come to expect.
The initial imagery from SkyFi first exposed the gigantic scale of the apparel mountain, suggesting its enormity was visible from space. That was until additional images from geospatial experts, Bill Eerdmans, began to document the simple disposal method of incineration, which started in October 2021 and continued until the last of it was burned around June 2022.
Technically, a savvy media professional would suggest this is old news. The mountain of clothes went over a year ago and is no longer a concern - out of sight and mind.
Yet, all the distractions in the world cannot prevent the problem from happening again.
People that buy from fast fashion retailers need to see these images on their TV screens at prime time. After doing an online shopping rekey, they need to see it pop up on their social media feeds instead of exposure to more ads for more fast fashion sites. The only people seeing this and other stories are those actively looking for them.
So what can we do until mainstream media deems this type of story relevant enough for primetime headlines? Follow
And share the news that mainstream media won't! Tell friends over coffee and show younger generations too.
It's heartbreaking that we have to this, but until core media outlets swap their lens from business-as-usual to purpose-driven, it's vital we take it into our own hands.

The Carbon Almanac highlights that NYC emits nearly two metric tons of carbon every second. Seems like the perfect setting for world leaders to host The focus is ‘Getting It Done’, which makes sense since we’re a long way off reaching net zero by 2050 targets.
