Chiefs lead race for Richards Bay star
Mar 7, 2021 - 02:22 pm By Sipho Mlotha
PREMIERSHIP
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly leading the race for the signature of Richards Bay star defender Veluyeke Zulu.
SuperSport United are also said to have entered the race for the former Golden Arrows centre-back, who is reportedly on the radar Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 26-year-old lanky defender is expected to become a free agent soon as his contract with the GladAfrica Championship side is udnerstood to be expiring at the end of the current season.
Zulu played a good game when the first division club defeated the Soweto giants Chiefs in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup recently.
"These three teams are talking to him for his services," a source close to the player tells KickOff.com.
"SuperSport has also joined the race for the player and has already approached his representatives. The big three contacted him directly but he referred them to his agent.
"Even though the boy is looking forward to joining any of these teams, first he might want to see if Richards Bay wins promotion to the DStv Premiership or what before taking any decision.
"He is willing to join Chiefs. He sees an opportunity to play in Naturena, and he is now ready for PSL. The reason Arrows released him is because he was not ready at the time."
Other clubs Zulu has previously played for include Maritzburg United and Royal Eagles.
Journalists and stakeholders cry to PSL
Mar 8, 2021 - 08:44 am By Ernest Fakude
PREMIERSHIP
The PSL's decision to not allow journalists at stadiums is not only affecting media houses but also other important stakeholders in the game.
Despite South African cricket and rugby allowing journalists to cover their activities at their playing venues, the PSL has made them no-go areas and barricaded stadiums to deny journalists entry to do their jobs.
The PSL has not allowed journalists entry at stadiums for both league and cup matches since the country went into Level 5 lockdown due to Covid-19 in March last year.
Most journalists now rely on television to do match reports during PSL games while access to players and coaches is still highly unproductive using online portals for various reasons.
Stadium announcer Peter Mashata is also lamenting the situation of not allowing important stakeholders in the game entry at the stadiums despite the country now being on Level 1.
"The situation is bad and some people rely on PSL games to put food on top of the table for their families, and I also understand many freelancers have lost jobs because of the situation," Mashata tells KickOff.com.
"The role of stadium announcer is very important during the match. It's not only about announcing the starting line-up but also important information like in case there is a fire at the stadium."
AmaZulu duo Benni McCarthy and Thapelo Xoki have bagged double honours at the latest DStv Premiership monthly awards for January/February 2021.
McCarthy has bagged his first ever monthly accolade as coach of AmaZulu, after accumulating 15 points from eight league games between 13 January and 24 February.
The former Cape Town City mentor has transformed Usuthu since his arrival to take over from Ayanda Dlamini in December, with the club currently in sixth position on the log.
Xoki was voted the winner of the DStv Premiership goal of the month for his stoppage-time wondergoal to earn his side a dramatic 4-3 victory against Bloemfontein Celtic on 2 February.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has been selected as the Player of the Month for his instrumental role in the team's ongoing unbeaten run this season.
The Namibian international managed to score three goals and provide two assists in five appearances, missing one of the Brazilians' six games over the six-week period.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has discussed plans for the next transfer window when the club will finally be able to strengthen their squad.
Chiefs have endured a two-window transfer ban from world football governing body FIFA, which has seen them unable to make new signings since January 2019.
Hunt's arrival at the start of the season meant he has had to make the most out of what he has at his disposal, with the exception of promoting three youth players this season.
While their remains a few days left in the current PSL transfer window, the 56-year-old admitted he has a long list of potential acquisitions for the July/August window ahead of next season.
"Like anybody, I've got a list longer than my arm but that's all pie in the sky. It's like saying you want this one but you know it's not possible," Hunt told the media.
"Realistically, we obviously looking at targets, like any other team. We haven't done it for some time now and that's pretty much basically how it works.
"But what's attainable and what's not attainable is always a problem, so we've got to be realistic. It's not about saying [who you want]...
"It's easy, in football anybody can say, 'Oh, he's a good player', what about the player who's the right player? That's the most important thing. And that's what we need to do."
Having largely excelled with free-agent signings at Bidvest Wits previously, Hunt was asked whether he will be given a blank cheque book by Amakhosi.
"No, it's not going to work like that. Obviously everything will be done through the football manager [Bobby Motaung], in cohesion with myself and obviously a few other people," he explained.
"We'll see... Everything's done with a proper structure and proper signings, it's not going to just be anything, throwing [money] willy-nilly at this thing."
