Always good to finish a project and send off a happy client.

These boxes are called Butsudans. Basically Buddha houses : ]
They house a scroll called the Gohonzon. A focal point and a mirror into our deeper self. With all the good, bad and ugly that lies there to be worked on. Chanting Nam Myoho-renge-kyo with this allows us to see the aspects of our life that we want to change or the wisdom to see what we need to work on. There is no end point, it is a continual process.

Made from Tennessee red cedar and steel, they are built to look nice when they are being used and when they are in sleep mode.

Happy that the clients were as pumped as I was about these.

Neri Oxman is doing what i think is some of the most important work in the world right now. She and her team at MIT as well as her company Oxman, are designing for the future that we need to see. As they put it..”
“Envision a future of complete synergy between Nature and humanity, where human-made and Nature-grown become indistinguishable.
OXMAN is a new kind of company fusing design, technology, and biology to invent multi-scale products and environments—allowing design to empower science and science to empower design. As activist designers, we call for a fundamental shift from human-centric design to Nature-centric design. Categorical delineations between climate change and global pandemics, loss of biodiversity and loss of empathy for one another give way to authoring systems that address manifold challenges. Through this shift, we open ourselves up to moving beyond mere maintenance of Nature toward its radical betterment.
In one way, this is replacing materials like plastic, with materials that are alive, or were part of living things (pectin, casein, etc.). On another, she is looking at how to design cities, clothing, sculpture and buildings utilizing nature as the co-designer, or co-fabricator.
It is frightening to put out there, but I am applying for a job at Oxman and want to share some of the questions they have asked and my answers to them over the next few days. It is a dream job, with the best of the best in the world for what I have lived, breathed and dreamt of for more than 20 years. Still a long way to go, this is just the application.
The photos here are from her exhibition at SFMOMA in 2022. I went twice. One of the only shows ive ever been to more than once.
if you haven’t seen her on the Netflix documentary “Abstract: The Art of Design,” go check her episode out on there. I have watched it a number of times and it brought inspiration and hope for the future every time I do.

This Sterling Silver ring was initially forged from an actual steel skeleton key. After I got it into a shape I was really happy with, I made a mold and had it cast in Sterling.

The Skeleton Key Ring is easily adjustable to fit sizes from 5.5 to 7.
Perfect for those looking to spice up their collection with a unique, understated piece.

Price: $95

I took these shots of the Temple under the rainbow on my magic walk this year during the rain. It was such a special moment, to be the only person at or around the temple at that time, that I decided to get them made into metal prints to hang up in the shop. If you’d like your own copy to remember this year’s Burning Man by, or gift to that weirdo burner friend of yours, DM me which pic (the full rainbow or temple closeup) and I will put in the order for you. Prints are 8x12” and cost $99 per print (shipping included). It’s not normally my thing, but wanted to share the opportunity to reconnect with this special moment and place with those who also find it special.

This is my buddy Zulu and his epic .
Friendships and community have become much more of a reason for me to go back to this crazy difficult and inhospitable obstacle course in the dust. But seeing friends soaring and getting to help in any way I can give it real meaning.
Congratulations Z. I was fired up every time I saw Farmer out there! Happy I was able to catch it on my magic walk.

It’s a rare moment, but a witch told me that on the blue moon in August, from the right vantage point on a lakebed… you can see a dragon catch the moon in her tail.

All dressed up with nowhere to go. did great out there but had to stay in her nest when the mud got real.

Back from Burning Man. But here’s an image from my magic walk. This is “The Ursas” by Jen Lewin

A piece highlighting extinct species and those on the edge. To see it here with such strange and rare climate events makes it even more poignant.

I work at a pretty magical place . Things like this get created here and shop off to amaze people all over the place.
These are five pieces, “bicycles” of sorts that go to the Bay Area Design Museum. They were looking particularly good flocking on this trailer.
I wasn’t a part of this build and don’t know all the detail, ,but it was awesome to see them come together and go to a home where tons of kids are going to enjoy them!

The last show at down the block from me in Emeryville was excellent! Ceramicist Ben Belknap had his exhibition “Cave In” setup and sold it out!
The show took me places. For a relatively small gallery and smaller scale pieces of work, around each corner there was a new little story and it was super fun to wrap into his world. The show is over but keep an eye on him and support local artists and galleries! Can’t wait for the next one at the compound!

Here are some photos from the amazing exhibition show of taking place at Oakland City Hall. I got to spend some good time looking over his work when I was installing there. It felt good learning about this long time, Oakland artist who was unknown to me til then.
The eyes of all of his subjects just pull me in! If you can get into city hall, I highly recommend checking it out!

Why am I posting pictures of non-alcoholic beer? Well, here’s a hint. While the beverage was tasty, what I find more interesting is what is holding these cans together. A cardboard 6-pack holder! Biodegradable, sustainable, and safer for animals and living things. Why didn’t we think of this earlier? I hope more beverage companies start adopting this kind of smart design in their packaging.

It was fun to head to the Soiree this year and support and . Both of these guys for years have been close homies, champion maker/sculptors and I taught em everything they know ha, j/k 😜 It was great to see both of their pieces sell for high dollars and share a table and laughs at an event with lots of great art and artists. had a great piece in there too I’m sorry I didn’t get a pic of all the pieces.

It was also a surprise to see “The Assembled God” high up on the wall in the entryway. Digging its new home one year after being sold at the Soiree last year. The wall is so big it makes him look small.

Rocky’s piece is the burn barrel and Adrian the sculpture. Check these rising stars out.

I’m super fortunate to have one of the greatest side hustles of all time. Guiding hikes and teaching yoga out of Stinson Beach. It is the cosmic balance to being immersed in the industrial the other half of my life. But I am continually inspired by nature and her beauty, strength and resilience. And that is why I work in found materials…to bring awareness to the critical changes we need to make to survive. So that we can continue to enjoy the gift that is right there when we slow down, soak in these treasures and remember where we come from, remember who came before and those who will come after.

On the art-in-unlikely-places theme…you’ve probably heard like I did as I was headed out there that Japan has crazy vending machines. I didn’t find any with jeans or underwear (new or used), but even these had that minimalist, almost sci-fi aspect to them. Plus it was another fun game to test new things in here. They were usually really delicious. The states can for sure get better at both designing more mindfully in terms of the environment, but also in putting care into even the design of mundane things in our made world.

During my first day in Kansai, I was struck by the beauty of looking down. Seeing one manhole cover and then another and another, it was like a game i was playing within the city to discover a new one around every corner. There were so many I couldn’t even fit them all in one post! Which design stands out to you?

I have been listening to Stolen Focus by Johann Hari. It is good enough that I am recommending it here. We are losing more and more of our ability to pay attention. Everyone has heard that the attention span of each successive generation is shorter than the last. But it doesn't have to be. One of the big takeaways for me in this book is that sustained attention toward a goal is what is required to make the big and important things happen. As I mentioned in the I have a big goal toward 2030. And my Buddhist practice helps me literally every day to stay focused on this important point. One that will create a noticeable positive impact on American Culture.

Whether you have a big goal, or you are just trying to get things done in your day, this book had many great tips and made me realize that the more focused I am on my task in the moment, the less anxiety and worry I have about the next thing or the future in general. It has already been helpful and I hope you find it so too.

The moment when you realize that your neighbors are probably witches. I’m gonna have to go stop by.

I was in the new Blick in Berkeley with my sis and was so stoked to see the always amazing work of my buddy on the walls inspiring everyone in there. Congrats Lauren! You are a total badass!

I just got back from Japan and it was truly All Time! It's been forever since I was actually on a vacation for myself and this was a once in a lifetime kinda trip so i had to go. In addition to the world class snowboarding and backcountry in Hokkaido, the amazing food, the sincerity of the Japanese people, and the great friends I was there with and made there, there were also multiple 13 hour plane flights, layovers and time for reflection. Rolling with the punches of the weather and bodies needing rest in between was a great reminder to actually slow down and listen. To myself, to my body, to quiet. To take moments out of the day to day to just breathe and truly enjoy the journey. This was the perfect trip to start off the year and 2023 sure seems to have some epic ahead.

Remember this private commission piece I’ve been working on? I got a lot of awesome guesses on my last post and wanted to share a few of my favorites before I actually tell you what it is;)

“No idea, but it would make a great candle holder”

“Steampunk prosthetic”

“Coat rack for sure”

“It’s a maze for a squirrel that cracks the nuts he wins at the end” (probably my favorite one😂)

So close…yet so far. Anyone else want to give it their best shot before I give the final reveal?👀

You know how the saying goes…one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! While someone may just see a big pile of…well garbage…someone else (me and a bunch of you out there) see a load of opportunity to reuse and create something awesome. How magical is it that we can create something completely new, original and cool out of materials that were meant to be at the end of their life?

Check out this awesome new emergent residency in Oakland! was built as a spot for creatives to come and hang out and even live! Between gentrivelopment and cannabis, just finding a space to do your work is hard, much less live for artists in Oakland. Ivy Hill Arts was built toward that goal. I love what they say about it “Affordable spaces where artists may live and create together are the foundation for experimentation and invention, as well as culture-shaping and movement-making.”

There was a lot of great art but I at least got a couple shots at the opening. Special love for this fire hose chair of course. And stoked I got to learn about …his work 🔥

What did your house look like on NYE? I woke up with the storm and saw some water outside my door. Came back in for a few hours and when I next stepped out, it was into this puddle less than an inch from my threshold. Made brek as fast as I could, changed clothes and got ready for a long ass day. From 10:30 til dark I bailed water and trenched my entire yard. My neighbor came over to help like an angel ( ), and my family showed up as heroes too. Bailing into my large green trash cans and wheeling it to the street 50+times. My estimate is between 2000 and 3000 gallons of water that day.
The pics show what I was looking at, then what it looked like after it drained, then the corresponding ant invasion since they apparently got flooded too.
We now have systems in place, and redundant systems. And got the neighbors runoff draining into their yard instead of accidentally into ours.
The ants are gone and the damage in my room was minimal but wow. My body felt like I ran a marathon. I didnt come back to normal til a few days ago.
I hope you are all staying dry and safe out there. This weather is exciting as hell though. It was like being in war without bullets, and it felt like we won the battle. Glad I have the proper gear, and great fam and community support.
I dont have any vids of the gnartown thrashdown bucket brigade because my phone got soaked and stopped working about an hour into the fracas. But trust me, it would have been worth a viewing.
