On Sunday, my family and I visited Soul Food. This is a monthly devotional/gathering hosted by the LSA of San Clemente where friends come together to share music, prayers and elevated conversations. The theme this time was dedicated to followed by a musical program featuring Tara Ellis.

is an international campaign dedicated to remembering the story of 10 women who were martyred for their belief in a faith that promoted gender equality — absent and criminalized in Iran — justice and truthfulness.

I have two daughters, so I find myself reflecting on the limitations that society and culture place on girls. I am grateful that I grew up in a community and family that fostered gender equality. I am mindful of the nature of the conversations I have with my kids as well as my students about their role in the world. We often discuss how empowering others helps my girls grow and develop too. The art, the music, the quotes and writings shared on Sunday were a beautiful reminder of how the story of these 10 women touches others and brings attention to trailbrazers like Susan B. Anthony, Tahirih, Marie Currie and Rosa Parks, women who came before them.

On a personal note, thank you Jean Quinn for always including my kids and generously giving of yourself. And to Tara Ellis whose version of the Healing Prayer has been a part of our family's prayers for a long long time. Isabella loved meeting you in person.
