The First Draft

The first draft of the next novel, a sequel to Fly Catcher, is now written. But this is just the beginning!

The plot is there, the characters are there, the locations and all the scenes are there. But, one of the most enjoyable stages of writing comes next. Does the structure work? Does it all make sense? Do I need more research? What’s missing, who’s missing, and how can it be better?

These questions, and many more, are all addressed in the editing. A process I enjoy very much. There were five drafts to Fly, and that doesn’t include the final, final polish! With luck, the next book will be ready in 2024.

“We went into the heart of Africa self-invited — therein lies our fault.” Stanley’s Diaries. This time I’ve chosen a work of non-fiction to share with you. I first read Tim Jeal’s detailed biography Stanley to learn about historical Africa – the origins of the murderous and brutal European colonial endeavours, their imperial ambitions, and the Arabic and Atlantic slave trades....

The Lacuna 24/01/2022

A book by the great author Barbara Kingsolver written a decade after (possibly) her most famous work The Poisonwood Bible. For me, Lacuna is equally as enjoyable in its scope and scale, and in the beautiful way the author draws her characters. We find ourselves deeply committed to the endearing protagonist, Harrison William Shepherd, whose life we follow from Mexico in the 1930s, where he spends his childhood and early adulthood, to North Carolina, and then back to Mexico....

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives 17/01/2022

The first book I'm recommending for your reading pile is the beautifully written, heartwarming and funny, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin. It is a clever tale, set in Nigeria, about the four very different wives of the egotistical and slightly dim, Baba Segi. The story is expertly told through the voices of all five characters, it has humour, tragedy and secrets, and I found it hugely entertaining.

On Grief (beautiful writing from Barbara Kingsolver).

'As long as I kept moving, my grief streamed out behind me like a swimmer's long hair in water. I knew the weight was there but it didn't touch me. Only when I stopped did the slick, dark stuff of it come floating around my face, catching my arms and throat till I began to drown. So I just didn't stop.'
