Your daily dose of cinema love. I’m working on my feature here and was listening to this video in the background, Spielberg talking about Kubrick, but this part in particular stopped me. What Spielberg is describing is the true magic of cinema. The opportunity we have to not only emotionally impact people, but spiritually impact them. Seeing 2001 in the theater is something that changed Spielberg’s life, influencing every single film he’s ever made. It made him long for the exploration of the vastness of space, something unobtainable, which has driven his desire to make movies that explore the human condition with that same energy. That’s a spiritual thing if you ask me. As much as we sometimes don’t want to think about, the power of story is 24 frames per second is beautiful.

What do you think? Here’s the thing. There are some great movies coming out. And there are a lot of movies that are not being censored and pushing the boundaries and all that, BUT there aren’t a lot of chances being taken on little 2 million dollar movies that are completely different than everything coming out that have that potential to turn into something huge. We are also just seeing these stanky bu****it, cookie cutter movies - the same thing over and over. Most new movies, I can predict the outcome, the character arcs, and the overall theme after like 10 minutes. And the overuse of shallow CGI, violence, and action - which is starting to get lazy and look like a cheap ass video game. Again, it’s not that there aren’t amazing movies being made, it’s that there aren’t a lot of amazing movies being made, and they aren’t being show in theaters. And I really don’t care what people say. The whole “oh, it’s just convenient and easier to watch at home” thing. Eat s**t with that malarkey. That’s like telling sports fans that games will only be streamed from now on. No more stadiums, no more beer with friends, no more energy from the crowd. Sports fans would flip s**t. In fact, they did. During the peak of the C worded you know what. ANYWAY, there’s my rant. The hope? The pendulum always swings the other way. Our generation and younger will be the ones to give it that initial push. We gotta make it happen.

Oh, how things have changed. There is so much more violence in film these days. So much so that most of it is pathetic, shallow, and lacks any artistry and craftsmanship. At least, that’s how I feel. Most of the movies from the 90s and 70s are nothing compared to some of the gore we see today, but, for example, the violent climax at the end of Taxi Driver is a billion times more impactful than anything coming out today. The ending of that movie is a masterclass in violence, but it goes further because it’s more about the tension and release starting from the very first scene. The catharsis. Every time I watch that movie, from beginning to end, I jump out of my seat with that final fun shot. Anyway, the spec feature I’m working on now is going to be my first script with violence, so I’m doing everything I can to learn from the greats.

What I love most about this clip is what she says at the end. It goes so far beyond the movie itself. The idea that we all have the capacity to form impactful relationships with people we barely know that can influence us for the rest of our lives. Brings the word “sonder” to mind for me. The sad thing, especially today, is that most of us isolate ourselves rather than making the effort to connect. Some of us live in a city where all we have to do is step outside to make a meaningful connection, but we choose not to. And I absolutely love how she captures the essence of meaningful connection in such a beautiful but chaotic setting. And it seems like that’s what drove her in the first place.

Lost In Translation captures the beauty of Tokyo in a way that is hard to articulate. Not only that, but the fact that it’s from the perspective of an American filmmaker with a deep respect for the city makes it more impactful. My favorite movie of hers, and I highly recommend watching it if you haven’t seen it. One Murray’s best performances too.

Orson Welles reflecting on his life and career. I’ve always been fascinated by this man. Yes, partly because of Citizen Kane, but more so because of his perspective and personality. I’ve always loved to hear him speak about life. And even from just this one small clip, there’s a lot to takeaway. One, the way you view yourself is so much more important than the way others view you. Two, don’t do things to prove anything to other people - do things to prove to yourself what you can do. Three, try to keep the same attitude you had when you fell in love with your craft from start to finish. With projects but also with life in general.

Thank you to for making my script a Quarter Finalist. I’m really proud of that. It’s my first pilot and the 3rd contest I’ve ever submitted to. 3500 people submitted, so making it into the top 25% is an accomplishment to be proud of - which is why I want to say AMAZING WORK to everyone else who made it. I’ll drink a glass of wine with you in spirit tonight. Excited to see what’s next.

As for the clip… Spielberg is just the goat. His humility and willingness, eagerness to collaborate with ANYone who has a good idea is so admirable. Love him for that. It’s the same thing when taking notes on a script. Be humble. Get rid of the ego that stems from insecurity. The clearer you can see, the better of a story you can tell.

Part 4: Writing A Feature. Just about “finished” with the first act. And you know what I mean by finished. This is just the first pass. I’ve done a lot of development work and have a clear sense of where it’s going, but more importantly, I feel the emotion, the impact that I want this to have. I don’t want to lose that. That’s why I’m trying to get through with this first draft as quickly as possible. And maybe that could help some of you too. Try writing down the emotional journey you want the audience to feel first. An emotional outline. Like Tarantino says. Write down the way you will emotionally orchestrate the audience, because, on the bad days, you can work to connect yourself with that again. For me… Listening to music, listening to interviews of my favorite filmmakers, and watching movies helps me get connected again.

As for what Scorsese says… Of course. Movies are so much more than just movies. For all of us, right? I’ll put the full interview in my stories. It’s a classic.

Love this clip so much. I’ve posted before. But I’m really starting feel the words are needed more and more every single day. I don’t know about you, but I HUNGER for movies that pay homage to the 90s wave and the 70s wave. Everything is so different now, but this idea of “creating our own industry” is right in the palm of our hands. We all just have to really come together to shake things up. Who else will if we don’t?

Tarantino on the two horror movies his mom didn’t want him to see. Of course, he saw them. The Exorcist being one of them - one of the best, most iconic horror films ever made. A movie that influenced cinema more than most people know.

I’m working on my feature here. It’s not a horror, but there are definitely horror elements in it. And I will 100% be stealing from some of the best horror films out there for inspiration :)

Young Jack Nicholson interview on his delayed success. You know what I love most about this? His gratitude and ability to see the bigger picture. Not being resentful about his things went, but rather, seeing the good in his things are. Feeling lucky and making the most out of his delayed success. And I mean… Look at what happened. Francis Ford Coppola’s famous rant during the shooting of Apocalypse Now - a movie that went through hell to come to life. A defining moment in Coppola’s life and career. What I love about this clip is how deeply he’s imbedded into the chaotic passion of brining his vision to life. I love every word out of his mouth here. He had to go deep to find the reasons to keep going, and his depth resulting of the iconic movies of our time. Hope this gives you a kick in the ass. Keep pushing.
