➡️ 5 ways to get rid of the load after the whole day of therapy sessions with your clients. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⚠️Burnout happens when you neglect your needs for too long. This affects your self-awareness and the strengths of connection with your body to the point that you start missing out the warning signs it is trying to communicate with you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The full attention you are giving your clients and the load they drop onto you, with time, starts being overwhelming, so make sure you shake off the load every day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

2️⃣ Make mindful breathing a norm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Implement mindful breathing exercises various times a day, especially before, between and after client work. This will help you be connected to yourself, aware of your feelings and body as well as be more present.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3️⃣ Scream into a pillow (if you really feel like it). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whether is anger or accumulated emotions from the whole day of listening to your clients and not having much time to rest, screaming into a pillow can give you a good release of unwanted energy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

4️⃣ Walk barefoot and focus on the sensation you notice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mindful walking help bringing your attention to the present moment, calm your mind and develop self-awareness of your body and emotions. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You might be reading and thinking...sounds great but I don't have time to waste.

Sounds familiar?

You see...working constantly, being always available has been glamourised as the correct way of doing things to the point that rest is coded deeply in your subconscious as a waste of time.

⚠️This the drives you to feel guilty and staying in a whirlpool of work and battling guilt. To avoid guilt you work more.

But the thing is, it's all an artificial creation that sooner or later will drive you to BURNOUT.

You don't know where to start, I get it. Suddenly adding rest to your daily schedule feels odd.

❗But remember:

✅Rest is productive.
✅Rest is part of your job as a therapist.
✅Rest is yourresponsibility.
✅Rest is part of your ethics to provide clients with the quality support.
✅Rest is your right, not a luxury.

Self-care is crucial to beat burnout, but self-care alone has only short-term effect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Self-care is only one of the five steps therapists need to take to beat burnout and be resilient enough to prevent it whenever it starts sneaking upon you again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Back in the day when I was totally exhausted, had no motivation and overworked, little did I know how to handle it. It drove me to burnout and as an unexperienced counsellor, I blamed myself for it all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

➡️It's not that I didn't like my job, but I felt that something was missing. I later discovered it was PURPOSE. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Why? Because they forget one very important thing: you are humans first, then you are therapists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👉It's not your choice, it's your responsibility ❗

If you are a therapist, looking after your mental health is as important as professional development

But...

Do you work as much on keeping your mind healthy and rested as much as gathering next qualifications and certificates?

This might make you angry with me, but it's the truth: most therapist abandoned the work on their personal development, which leads them to burnout and ultimately providing poor quality of service to their clients.

Do you think it's ok? Because I don't think so.

And it's not just for you, it's also for your clients. It's an ethical thing yo do.

The moment I realised that realized that self-care, mental health breaks, boundaries and saying no are not signs of selfishness or arrogance but my obligation to stay in a good shape for my own well-being and well-being of others.

Remember:

By taking care of yourself the way I need to, meeting your physical, emotional and spiritual needs, I make sure that I am fully present for my clients and loved ones and can offer them my support and time at high quality.

When burnout out I am at disservice to myself and everyone else.

My name is Ania (formally Anna, but in my home country, Poland, everyone calls me Ania). I love coffee, food, traveling and learning languages (on on mission to master Arabic). I traveled to 60+ countries and lived 5. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I had a dream of big adventures and becoming a psychologist since I was very young. So, a few weeks after graduating from high school, I packed all my staff (which fit in two bags) and left to Scotland for some adventure while taking a gap year before returning to Poland to study psychology.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But life has its tricks- I quickly fell in love with Scotland, it is still one of my favourite places on earth. So I decided to apply for psychology there and I was shocked that I entered into one of the best univeristies in the country. I was so happy, but the work was real (studying in the 2nd language and holding 3 part time jobs to sustain myself was struggle beyond exhaustion). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But guess what! My dream was too big to moan. I graduated and continued my training in counselling and psychotherapy (mindfulness and Buddhist psychology). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Together with studying and being a counsellor, I burnt myself out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started questioning myself and the profession. Left for Chile, designed incredible mindfulness based programs for companies and schools and that's how I discovered coaching. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Years later, I love my profession again.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👉2 steps to be a better therapist and avoid burnout :

✔Step 1:
Identify your needs, for example the amount of rest you need, hobbies, things you love doing, things you want to say ''yes'' to and what you need to say ''no'' to. Take an occasional day off.

✔Step 2:
Give yourself permission to do these things (and believe me, there is always time). Small amounts of time off and things you love regularly will help you be 100 time more effective in all my roles: a therapist, family member, spouse, friend.

Sounds simple, right? So many of my clients struggle with following these two steps. And lack of time isn't the reason. It's all in the mindset and limiting beliefs.
