Known for her charisma and charm, Orfilia De Jesus, 67, would light up a room. A Colombian native and proud Dover resident, she "moved mountains" for her loved ones and was fearless in her approach to life.
"She lived for her children and sacrificed a lot. She did the impossible so her kids could have a better future than her," said her husband, Francisco de Jesus.
Orfilia De Jesus, 67, spent 37 years alongside her husband Francisco De Jesus.
Francisco remembers meeting his wife 37 years ago and immediately falling for her grace and beauty that "surpassed physical looks." When he moved to the mainland, Francisco left behind his family in Puerto Rico and for years, didn't speak to them. Orfilia insisted on reconnecting the two, which she did, and became the unifying thread between the two.
"In my family, she became the adored one. Wherever she went, she won people over," Francisco said in Spanish.
Orfilia worked hard to send her two children, Jason and David, to college. They graduated from Seton Hall University and thank their mother for their successful careers. The two are now back home taking care of their father following his battle with COVID-19, but they have a hard time figuring out where everything is. Their mother was the one who kept the house in order.
Dover resident Orfilia De Jesus, 67, spent much of her time volunteering for local community organizations.
"She was the one who did everything in the house, making sure we were comfortable and making sure the old man was comfortable, too. We've been running around the house trying to find where everything is," Jason said.
Their mother enjoyed volunteering for local organizations like Casa Puerto and Dover's Rotary Club. A crafty woman, she enjoyed spending time on community projects and sharing her creative talents with others. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time at her home garden, which many admired. Once he recovers, Francisco hopes to start planting flowers in his wife's garden as a tribute to her.
Orfilia De Jesus, 67, was known for her charisma and positive attitude.
"In Dover, people have felt her death so deeply. She was unique as a wife, very creative, just excellent," Francisco said.
