Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday 11 May and continued through to Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.

As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt.

The previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes was set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Hilda attempted this record to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams.”

“I also decided to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities,” she added.

Hilda prepared for the event by creating a 35-item menu “as a guide” for every meal that she would cook.

She ensured that she had the necessary ingredients to make each recipe, with her team procuring further food items while the cook-a-thon was underway “based on what was needed to be topped up.”

Hilda’s record attempt took the world of social media by storm, with millions in Nigeria and beyond following her progress via an Instagram live stream.

Hilda’s cook-a-thon was in fact so popular that our website crashed for two days due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans.

Several high-profile Nigerian figures visited Hilda to support her during her record attempt, such as the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; and award-winning singer Tiwa Savage.

Atiku will be defeated in North-East – Gombe State Governor

The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has no chance of winning in the North-East.

“Our chances are very high indeed and we are strong in our resolve to work towards the success of our great party,” he said.

Yahaya stated this in Minna on Saturday when he visited former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar.

When asked if he would support the All Progressives Congress’ presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, who is his party man, over his brother, Atiku, the Gombe governor said there was nothing like brother and party man, adding that Nigeria was one and went beyond region.

“It doesn’t matter that Atiku is from the same region with me. They are all my brothers and Nigeria is one, we are struggling to maintain it as a united and indivisible country,” he said.

He also stated that he was in Minna to visit Abdulsalami over his recent hospitalisation in a London hospital.

“We came to wish him well and quick recovery. He is our father, an elder statesman, and a well-respected one at that, so we are here to show him that we care about him,” he stated.

He added that one of the reasons Gombe was relatively peaceful despite being surrounded by states bedevilled by insecurity was their ability to realise their differences early enough.

“We were able to realise our differences early enough, some families also have a combination of both religions and Gombe is cosmopolitan in nature,” he said.

Kwara son kills father, buries co**se, steals money and motocycle

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man, Hassan Ibrahim, for allegedly killing his 90-year-old father, Sabi, a retired army corporal and stealing the deceased ATM card to withdraw his money in the state.

Hassan, after perpetrating the crime, buried his co**se and fled to Kaduna State, where he had been secretly withdrawing his father’s money with the ATM card.

Parading the suspect at the police headquarters in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, said Hassan was arrested following a report made by his sister, Aishat.

He said, “On August 5, 2022, one Aishat Ibrahim reported that her 90-year-old father, Sabi Ibrahim, a retired army corporal to the police command, was missing. The circumstances of his disappearance elicited suspicion hence the resolve of the command to get to the root of it.

“Investigation into the matter led to the arrest of one Ibrahim Hassan, a biological son of the missing old man. During investigation, the suspect confessed to having administered paracetamol injection mixed with other substances on his father, who became weak and dizzy immediately after the injection

This he did after coming from the bank where he took his father to renew and collect his ATM card. The suspect, thereafter, took the father on a motorcycle he borrowed and conveyed his father to an isolated uncompleted building and strangulated his father.”

In a bid to conceal the crime, Okesanmi said Hassan dug a shallow grave where he buried his father after dispossessing him of the Wema Bank ATM card, adding that he escaped to Kaduna State and started withdrawing from his late father’s account.

“He withdrew a total sum of N59,000. He (Hassan) stated further that the purpose of killing his father was to dispossess him of the ATM card since he already knows the pin. He also sold the borrowed motorcycle and eloped to Kaduna State where he was eventually arrested.”

Okasanmi said that the ATM card and the stolen motorcycle had been recovered by the police, adding that the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Name A*o Rock after Queen Elizabeth – Ohanaeze

The apex socio-cultural organisation in Igbo land, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has asked the Presidency to jettison the call to name the University of Nigeria Nsukka after Queen Elizabeth University of Nigeria, saying such move can be best for A*o Rock in Abuja or other parts of the North.

This was as it stressed that the former presidential aspirant of the Young Progressives Party, Adamu Garba, must tender an apology to Ndigbo for making such unhistorical remark.

Garba, had, on Friday, advised President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to immortalise Queen Elizabeth who died on Thursday, at 96, by renaming the UNN after her.

But reacting, the Chidi Ibeh-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said such remark was capable of instigating conflict in the country.

According to the statement, “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has cautioned the Federal Government against renaming the foremost and most prestigious University, the University of Nigeria Nsukka after the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

“The University has bequeathed a legacy in south-eastern Nigeria and it’s worthwhile for the former APC presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba to know that the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, was renamed after the late British monarch, and is known as Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre, Umuahia, yet Nigerians have yet to see the late Queen Elizabeth’s legacies in northern Nigeria. It’s appropriate for the North to have a fair share of the Queen’s legacy.

“If the Federal Government and the Presidency wish to immortalise late Queen Elizabeth II, it should look at the role of the Queen in granting Nigeria political freedom and independence on October 1, 1960. And the most appropriate place to show gratitude to Great Britain should be at A*o Rock.

Charles III has officially been proclaimed king in a historic ceremony in St James’s Palace on Saturday.

The ceremony comes days after Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday aged 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss and senior members of her government have also taken oaths of loyalty to King Charles III in the House of Commons.

Charles is king and head of state not only of the United Kingdom but of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Obi’s foreign trips not for fundraising – Media office

The Obi-Datti Media Office has said the foreign trips embarked upon by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, were not for fundraising but to sensitise and carry along Nigerians abroad on his upcoming agenda of rebuilding the country.

This was in reaction to a call by the Tinubu-Shettima Connect for the Independent National Electoral Commission to disqualify Obi from the 2023 presidential race for allegedly seeking funds abroad contrary to the Electoral Law.

In a statement on Sunday, the Obi-Datti Media Office described Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti, as knowledgeable persons who know the law and operate within its ambit and who became what they are financially, politically and socially doing legitimate businesses.

The statement read in part, “Obi’s successful trip abroad which is ostensibly to sensitise and carry along Nigerians abroad on his upcoming agenda of rebuilding the country is open and transparent and not fundraising. But we know why it’s discomforting to some people because they cannot meet Nigerians in the diaspora, knowing that they contributed to their leaving the country in the first place.

Their own understanding of structure is the abundance of looted funds in their kitty that they plan to deploy on hungry Nigerian voters during the election to sway their votes.

“They know nobody has the kind of stolen funds they have and are always uncomfortable at anything suggesting to them that their opponents could match them. Obi did not go to beg for money but to sell himself and his mission to Nigerians outside the shores who are critical stakeholders in the Nigeria project.

“The Media office, therefore, needs to educate them that Obi and his running mate are knowledgeable duo who know the law and operate within it and who became what they are financially, politically and socially doing legitimate businesses.”
