Peter Obi Says Fuel Subsidy Is Organised Crime, Must Be Removed. .
October 2, 2023
NEWS
Obi, who said this on Monday while speaking on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’, however, faulted the approach adopted by President Bola Tinubu in removing the subsidy, saying that he would have taken a better thought-out approach before removing it to avert the current acute effects and looming strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has insisted that fuel subsidy is an organised crime and that he would have removed it if elected as the Nigerian president.
The former Anambra State Governor during the programme monitored by SaharaReporters said, “Let me reiterate my position, and I say it, fuel subsidy is organised crime as it was being practised. In my tweets of September 19, 2022, and in my manifesto, it showed clearly the way we would have approached it.
"Fuel Subsidy is an organised crime. I have said this repeatedly that it should be removed. I mentioned it repeatedly during the campaign. I mentioned that what we are consuming is far above what we are supposed to be consuming.
"Governor Isah Yaguda in his interview recently said that a friend of his who was involved in fuel subsidy, gains and everything told him that it is criminals that are even tired of making money through that type of crime, it should be removed. This shows there is a criminality side of it.
"Since the subsidy has been removed, our consumption is just about half of what it is. For me, the approach would have been to remove the corruption and criminal side of it and remove the excess demand that is not factual.
“By doing this, you would have reduced it by 50 per cent. The remaining 50 per cent is what we would have been able to, after consultation with various stakeholders, find a way in an organised manner, remove and show the proceeds or the gains of the removal to be invested in critical development areas - education, health and pulling people out of poverty.
"When you do it in an organised manner, with proper palliatives that are well structured, thought after, not just haphazardly, you would have been able to see Nigerians go along with you.
"One of the things we are suffering with this announcement is what I can call the announcement effect. Policies like these are not what you just announce haphazardly. There are things you thought through. That is what we would have done as the Labour Party.”

BREAKING: Election Petition Tribunal Affirms Election Of Adamawa Governor, Fintiri October 2, 2023
NEWS
Ardo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had challenged the outcome of the March 18 election and April 18 declaration of Fintiri as the winner following the April 16 supplementary election.
The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Yola, the Adamawa State capital on Monday, affirmed the election of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, after dismissing the petition filed by Dr. Umar Ardo.
Ardo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had challenged the outcome of the March 18 election and April 18 declaration of Fintiri as the winner following the April 16 supplementary election.
Ardo, in his petition instituted on May 8, joined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Fintiri and 16 others as respondents, alleging that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act.
The petitioners further alleged that the exercise conducted by the 1st respondent was marred by corrupt practices (bribery), threats and violence and however sought the nullification of the entire exercise.
On their part, the 1st to 4th respondents told the tribunal that the petition was statute-barred and could not be entertained by the tribunal, alleging that the petition was not supported with evidence nor filed in compliance with the provision of the Electoral Act.
In her judgement, the Chairperson of the tribunal, Theodorer Uloho, dismissed the petition as "incompetent, defective, incongruous and not properly instituted before the tribunal." She also held that the petitioners were not certain about what they wanted.
She further held that the allegation of corrupt practices must be proven with cogent and credible evidence and that failure to do so rendered the petition worthless, lifeless and without any probative value.
She dismissed the petition and awarded the sum of N200,000 in favour of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th respondents.
Reacting to the judgement, Adamawa State deputy governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta declared it as a "victory for Adamawa State”.
She however extended an olive branch to the party that lost out to join hands with the Fintiri’s administration to move the state forward.
On his part, the counsel for the petitioner, Sylvester Emanube, faulted parts of the judgement, saying, "There are many decisions that were made excellent, there are some that we think we have to look at again; particularly the ones that the Court of Appeal had made decisions on, which were also decided today."

My Husband Is Not A Magician; We Inherited Things That Happened Many Years Ago – Nigerian First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu October 2, 2023
NEWS
She said this during an interdenominational church service tagged, “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” which was held in Abuja as part of events to mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary.
Oluremi Tinubu, Nigerian First Lady on Sunday said her husband, President Bola Tinubu inherited the situation of the country and that he is not a magician.
She said this during an interdenominational church service tagged, “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” which was held in Abuja as part of events to mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary.
She said, “All we inherited are things that had happened many years ago; we are not here to put blame on any administration but to fix what has been damaged.
“My husband is not a magician; he is going to work and I believe and hope that we will have peace in this country; the best is yet to come to us.”
She said that a “Nigeria of abundance has begun, and to be part of the greatness that God has started in the nation, Nigerians must look beyond their current realities and embrace hope anew”.
“Good governance can only be impactful if the people follow the example of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who embodied the fruit of the spirit, including love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance and forgiveness,” she said.
“There is no challenge, obstacle or difficulty that we cannot overcome or surmount if we imbibe the nature of Christ who said in Matthew 11:28 that ‘come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’.
“In times like these, all we do is to keep our hope alive, the lively hope which Jesus Christ has birthed in us,” she added.

EXCLUSIVE: Uproar At Nigerian National Assembly As Senate President Akpabio Creates Office For Wife. October 1, 2023
NEWS
Sources told SaharaReporters that many senators were disappointed with Akpabio’s opening of the Office of the First Lady to the Senate President, which did not exist in the previous Assemblies.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio is again in the eye of the storm for creating an office for his wife, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio.
Unoma is the founder of Family Life Enhancement Initiative (FLEI), a non-governmental organisation.
Sources told SaharaReporters that many senators were disappointed with Akpabio’s opening of the Office of the First Lady to the Senate President, which did not exist in the previous Assemblies.
“There is outrage in the National Assembly because Senate President Akpabio created an office for his wife, Unoma. There is now an office of First Lady to the Senate President,” a source said.
Akpabio is serving as the 15th president of the Nigerian Senate. He emerged as President of the 10th Assembly after securing 63 votes to beat a former governor of Zamfara State, Abdul-Azziz Yari who secured 46 votes.
He served as Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District from 2015 to 2019 and also served as Minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022. Akpabio was the governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015.
Meanwhile, Akpabio is no stranger to controversies. In August, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that fellow senators were angry with Akpabio for exposing that they received bribe money from ministerial screening in a viral video.

Akpabio is heard in the video telling members of the upper legislative chamber that an undisclosed amount of money had been sent to each of them to use to enjoy their holidays.
Akpabio said this while addressing his colleagues before the adjournment of a motion moved by one of the senators.
In the viral video, Akpabio said, “In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the clerk of the national assembly.”

But when his statement sparked a rowdy moment on the floor of the Senate, he rephrased the statement and said, “I withdraw that statement. In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return.”
The Senate proceeded on vacation after concluding the screening of ministerial nominees sent to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.
SaharaReporters learnt that the senators were upset that Akpabio exposed that they got bribe money from ministerial screening. Sources told SaharaReporters that the aggrieved senators were unhappy about the ridicule and embarrassment the former Akwa Ibom governor’s unguarded statement had brought to them.
Sources in the National Assembly told SaharaReporters that N2 million was sent to each of the senators by Akpabio who had received N1 billion from ministerial nominees.
SaharaReporters learnt that the senators described Akpabio's action as blackmail and to ensure they received the stick from their constituents for a "paltry sum" while he had pocketed the bulk of the bribe money paid to them.
“Senators are upset with Senate President Akpabio for exposing the bribe money they get for ministerial screening. A paltry N2 million was sent to each of them. They are angry that now Nigerians know how they are bribed to allow ministerial nominees to take a bow and go,” a source had said.
“The Senate President collected over N1 billion from the screened ministers and sent only N2 million to the account of each of 109 senators, totalling N218 million,” another source had said.
“He never disclosed to the senators the source of the N2 million each sent to their accounts. Rather, what Akpabio did was to blackmail the Senators on Monday night in an open live television cast that money had been sent to the accounts of Senators for holidays. Then the following morning, senators received only N2 million each in their accounts while the senate president pocketed hundreds of millions of naira.
“What a shame and highest treachery and blackmail by the Senate President. Senators are getting ready for a battle with him because this has pitched Senators against their constituents who never knew that they were given only N2 million each for the so-called ‘allowance for holidays/vacation.’”
