A sustainable and inclusive Milan, that cares about the quality of life in the suburbs, building with renewable materials and the presence of greenery that is never happenstance. That is what emerges from the four projects that won the Reinventing Cities international call for tenders, which puts the emphasis on sustainability and innovation to regenerate abandoned areas of the 31 participating cities (Milan is the only one in Italy).

That is how the old Greco railway yard will become the first zero-emission neighbourhood in Italy, designed for social housing and immersed in a park. While in the San Siro neighbourhood the de Montel Stables will become a theatre of baths, with the restoration of the Art Nouveau building, a series of baths, a public park and a water amphitheatre.

Vitae, the new centre for cancer research on Via Serio, presents a sort of green spiral that connects the eight floors of the building and leads from street level to the panoramic public terrace, with kitchen gardens and vineyards; inside, laboratories, offices, and a guesthouse for researchers.

Finally, Coinventing Doria builds a new nine-storey hostel and a square on Via Doria; connecting the two, steps that can be used for concerts and socialising, that welcome the hostel’s guests into the life of the neighbourhood. In all the projects residents are the protagonists, and awareness is raised about sustainable mobility options and how best to use environmental resources.

This urban oasis of green in Turin is a model in sustainable architecture, and recalls the wonder of the Robinson Crusoe family’s extravagant tree house.

Architects Luciano Pia and Ubaldo Bossolono designed Verde 25, a five-story, sixty-three unit apartment and office complex. Curved balconies and winding staircases are built in wood, giving the place a handcrafted, homey feel.

The branches and tree trunks rendered in steel, appear to grow among countless trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants. There are 150 trees on the exterior and 50 in the courtyard, plus hundreds of other vines and plants that protect residents from noise and air pollution. Each plant has been thoughtfully selected to the changing of the seasons, so that something green blooms all year long.

The trees produce 150,000 liters of oxygen each hour and absorb 200,000 liters of carbon dioxide per hour. It’s not just a pretty building though — the whole mode of operation is sustainable. The heating and cooling systems use geothermal energy, and rainwater is recycled to help water the plants.

Climate change and the real estate construction supply chain: energy-environmental protocols are the answer for resilient, sustainable and healthy cities.

The latest publication by Green Building Council Italy provides the knowledge needed for a new urban construction that is attentive to man and the environment, taking as an example the numerous "green" projects carried out in our country.

Among the best practices presented in the book, three cases of regeneration on an urban scale in Milan stand out: Porta Nuova, City Life and Uptown.

Sustainable projects that have redesigned the shapes of suburbs and historic districts, revitalized urban voids and created an environmentally friendly and highly attractive urban planning model.

Places of life and meeting designed for the community, tailored not only for those who work and live there every day, but also capable of high tourist attraction.

The first eco sustainable shopping center (according to the intentions of those who thought it better to speak of a "green retail park") of the Farinetti family is located in Turin next to Eataly Lingotto: fifteen thousand square meters, spread over five floors, for tell - and sell - sustainable living.

Among the partners of a project costing 50 million euros of investment there is also FCA, which will have its space inside the mall, to present its most futuristic cars, such as the electric 500.

But in the wooden-framed building designed by architect Cristina Catino - powered by "clean" energy, geothermal energy and photovoltaic panels, with the floor capable of accumulating energy as customers walk through it every day, and plants free of grow on the external walls - 32 clothing brands (including major Italian fashion brands) and 24 brands linked to the home world will also coexist, as well as startups and small companies that have chosen to bet on sustainability, because Green Pea keeps its firm original focus - reinvigorated by the crisis of values opened by the pandemic - which is to rediscover the relationship between man and nature.

Lovers of futuristic cities can indulge themselves in Eco-Valley, Nice’s newest district on the Côte d’Azur.

A new eco-responsible destination where apartments, new technologies and facilities for leisure, sports and culture come together.

A special address and a special design as a future residential address with 17 storey high skyscrapers with round, organic shapes. In between, you will find roof gardens and small fields with chickens. This is the new green zone where everyone benefits from a very efficient and green energy supply.

A hidden structure huddled in the historic centre of Milan stands firm in between Milanian decades-old buildings.

Young architects of LPzR construct K19B, and it comes as a subsequent creation of K19A and K19AG, framing a single project K19. K19 consists of two residential interventions situated between historic buildings and recovered factories.

One of them is a seven-story building (K19B), and the other - a barrel-vaulted construction forming a roof restores a 1950s’ garage (K19A).

First, appearing as a complex assembly, K19B turns into a game of volumes and colour contrast, making up a high-rise geometric shape that hardly falls under the concepts of symmetry and order.

The composition adjoins the NZEB list and prides itself on utilizing strictly Italian materials in the construction, almost half of which are natural.

What contributes to its environmentally friendly status is its dry envelope technology which is optimal for reducing environmental impact. Besides, the system also helps to minimize heat losses.

The growing trend of sustainable construction and facility management does not only wink at respect for the environment, but include following the main trends Mawer carefully respects while working for our clients:

🔹PREFABRICATED HOUSES equipped with green certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design): they have less impact on the environment, favor the reduction of energy consumption and are also safer at seismic level.

🔹THE “SMART BUILDINGS”, systems managed in an automated and integrated way to reduce consumption and improve living comfort.

🔹5G TECHNOLOGY which favors the construction of intelligent buildings thanks to ultra-fast connection systems allowing the interconnection of data in the building sector.

🔹ADDITIVES TO REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS. In Italy much of the electricity is still produced today by the so-called traditional power plants, i.e. powered by large fossil fuels, primarily coal. This type of fuel generates a high carbon footprint. Suffice it to say that the construction sector is responsible for 36% of energy consumption and 3% of CO2 emissions released globally.

🔹SOLAR PANELS: the use of alternative energies such as photovoltaics has become essential for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the environment and also the consequent economic savings should not be underestimated.

🔹ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE to reduce pollution during design, and as the model of the "circular economy", an expression that indicates an economic system designed to be able to regenerate itself and therefore also be able to guarantee its own eco-sustainability.

🔹THE “NET-ZERO EMISSIONS”: the reduction of emissions incorporates carbon by 2050 undoubtedly represents one of the main aspects of the post-pandemic scenario.

Italian airports are using building information modelling (BIM) workflows used by Mawer as well to support both capital delivery and facilities management across their vast site.

The team could access information and make decisions upon it from a single point of truth.

Developing in a BIM environment, the project benefits from improved collaboration, coordinated timelines and a faster construction period. The team is also able to provide data for the airports facilities management team to use over the buildings life.

Solar Carve’s building in New York is sculpted at the angle of the sun in order to preserve solar exposure on the adjacent High Line Park.

We articulated the carved areas of the building with a faceted glass facade that rationalizes the complex geometry of the solar carve and also lends the building a striking gem-like appearance. Inside the building the carves create dynamic spaces that are well suited for private offices or employee collaboration spaces, supporting the various needs of office tenants in the building.

Solar Carve’s unusually high ceilings provide natural light and dramatic views of the High Line and Hudson River.

The High Line is also reaching new, more environmentally friendly heights with some of its skyscrapers.

Great example of eco sustainable construction and new approach to the facility management to be followed by Italian companies🇮🇹🇩🇰

CopenHill (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Bjarke Ingels, the founding partner and creative director of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is no stranger to radical architecture.

Yet, it's the design of CopenHill, a structure in his hometown of Copenhagen, that displays the sheer genius of the young architect.

At its core, CopenHill is proof that eco-friendly architecture can be accomplished with high design. To that end, the eco-friendly waste-to-energy power plant emits no toxins into the atmosphere. Far from it. The structure can burn 400,000 tons of waste annually into enough clean energy to power 60,000 homes in the area. But it's not just about waste management—it's about having fun too.

While Denmark receives a healthy amount of snow, the country is rather flat and not an ideal terrain for ski lovers. BIG took that fact and used it as an asset in its scheme. Atop the CopenHill roof is a nearly 1,500-foot-long ski slope, which is accessible through an elevator inside the building.

Together with for a more sustainable future in Italy as well 🇮🇹

Paris Smart City 2050 offers a totality helpful to a layperson’s understanding of green architecture; they visualize a restructuring of both Parisian energy consumption and the city’s architectural aesthetics.

Paris Smart City 2050 looks alluringly futuristic — and pleasant, so much greenery — but we’d be wise to remember that plans like these are but a small Band-Aid on the cancer of global warming.

Nevertherless, the lifestyle, energy consumption, and structural changes rendered exciting in Paris Smart City 2050 are valuable, and ideally would be implemented right away. In this case the plan is simply a study, only the first step for a city government rethinking what new building initiatives with an ecologically friendly aim might look like.

Great news from our partners !

Dussmann Service Italia, a company owned by the German giant leader in the field of facility management, has announced important news at Milano Finanza.

There will soon be a change at the top. The current president Pietro Auletta, who led the company for twenty-two years, leaves his post at the end of May. He is succeeded by Renato Spotti, who will always keep the position of managing director, also acquiring that of president.

"When I took over the company in 2000, the share capital was 3 million and we had about 250 million in turnover," recalls Auletta. Under his leadership, the group closed the 2021 financial statements with € 665 million in revenues, becoming one of the companies of the Dussmann Service group whose numbers have the greatest impact.

The goal of Dussmann Service Italia is to close 2022 with 700 million in revenues and reach 800 million within five years. The company is in fact in full growth and despite the pandemic, which put a strain on the Facility Management sector, growth of 30% was recorded from 2018 to 2021.

Our congratulations!

There’s no denying that climate change has become a more urgent matter over the past two decades.

Today’s construction industry contributes to 38% of energy-related carbon emissions around the globe. Due to recent innovations, options exist to reduce that number over time with specific methods and technology. However, you can also discover solutions for other issues when you work toward a more eco-friendly system.

It’s important to remember the most eco-conscious buildings are ones that already exist. When you take on a brand-new project, you have to source more supplies and labor to navigate the construction. Though old buildings may require specific fixes, you can avoid emissions and waste by maintaining and upgrading the structure.

Through retrofitting which Mawer offers to its clients, you can repurpose the structure for different uses. It’s the best way to maximize sustainability since you won’t have to demolish and construct a new building.

Instead, you can use eco-friendly supplies to upgrade the current structure.
