Public transport in Islington makes up almost one-third of all journeys in the borough, second only to walking. If we are to tackle the climate emergency, the importance of a well-resourced public transport network will only grow. As it stands, TfL is one of very few major public transport networks in the World which does not receive a central government grant.
Now the Tories are refusing to provide sufficient funding even to keep London moving. New proposals would see sweeping changes to our local bus network, including Route no. 4 being axed entirely, nos. 254, 259 and 476 all severely cut back and the re-routing of no.214 so that it would no longer run through Islington.
These proposals are a direct consequence of this Conservative Government’s refusal to fund Transport for London adequately and the harsh conditions attached to emergency funding packages throughout the pandemic.
