Helping Homeless Women
With Diagnosed Mental Health Challenges

The relationship between mental health issues and homelessness is much more connected than many people think. Living with mental health issues can often lead to situations that cause a person to be homeless and conversely homelessness often increases the chances of developing or exacerbating mental health problems. In fact, 75% of women who experience homelessness also struggle with their mental health and research has shown that a secure, safe and supportive living environment is essential. For over ten years, St. Clare Inn has been providing homeless women who struggle with mental health issues a place to heal.

At St. Clare Inn, a transitional housing program, our goal is to empower homeless women who struggle with mental health issues with an opportunity to achieve a lifetime of independent living, self worth and respect. Our work is focused on providing a continuum of support dedicated to mental health management, life-skills training, and civic and community engagement. Professionally trained staff assists each woman in developing and executing a plan in order to foster self-reliance and independent life skills while at the same time promoting self-sufficiency.

Today we are proud to join all those across Canada in raising awareness for those struggling with mental health challenges. The work we do at St. Clare Inn has been proven to be effective in making real change in the lives of homeless women who struggle with mental health issues. Help us continue our mission of providing professional help, a supportive social network, compassionate care and training for homeless women all within a safe residence.

An excerpt from a letter written by a former resident of St. Clare Inn.

"After I lost my job and my home, I lived on the streets for years. My single focus was to find food and shelter. This was exhausting and time-consuming, especially in the winter. I had one change of clothing that I carried with me through the city, in a backpack. Most nights I slept outside, under a tree if I was lucky. I often thought about su***de as a way to end things for good.

My life turned around when a social worker introduced me to Friar Tom. When Friar Tom told me that because of people like you, I could move into St. Clare Inn and have my own room, I cried. This is a clean, comfortable house with warm and friendly people who really care."

FUNDS RAISED THROUGH LINDA'S WALK SUPPORT THE IMPORTANT WORK OF ST. CLARE INN. Please join us on Saturday August 10, 2013.
